Pavement Whispers: Volume 255 January 14

From news of an all-you-can-eat fried-chicken buffet to Taj Mahal’s temporary post-fire location, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Chook Wings & Beer
We’re not ashamed to say that the way to our hearts is through our stomachs and all you have to do to seduce us is say these four little words – ‘all you can eat’. The culinary crew behind Phat Boy, Phat Elephant, Chai Thai and Chapter IV is adding a new buffet concept to its portfolio in the shape of Chook Wings & Beer  and be still our beating hearts. Taking over the space formerly home to The Hamptons in Hendra, Chook Wings & Beer will deliver an all-you-can-eat dining experience encompassing wings, burgers, sides (that means limitless fries), fried rice and salads. The wings will be the centrepiece of the offering, with eight flavours on available including the likes of sour cream and chive, buffalo, barbecue and more. This stomach-busting and heart-fluttering concept is set to open on the Australia Day weekend – we’ll have all of the tasty details for you soon!

Taj Mahal
Disaster struck New Farm’s dining scene just before Christmas, when local culinary institution Taj Mahal was gutted overnight by fire. The blaze, which also claimed neighbouring cafe Caneca Espresso & Bar, swept through the restaurant, destroying years worth of memorabilia collected over Taj Mahal’s 18 years of operation. Despite the unfathomable loss, Taj Mahal’s ownership has vowed to reopen, posting a message on its Facebook page earlier this month that the team is currently working to reopen in a temporary location across the road at 720 Brunswick Street – the former site of the Alibi Room. The space is expected to open in the coming weeks – stay tuned for a closer look.

The Market Hall
Woolloongabba’s thriving South City Square precinct has announced the forthcoming arrival of another retailer, due to open in mid-2020. The Market Hall is a multi-faceted one-stop shop for artisanal foodstuffs, incorporating a deli, grocer, butcher, baker and even a florist into its offering. The concept will boast a warm aesthetic reminiscent of European market halls, with an authentic brick facade harbouring a treasure trove of goodies. The Market Hall will be part of South City Square’s next wave of development, preceding the arrival of Woolworths and Reading Cinemas in 2021 and luxury hotel Hyatt Place in 2023.

From Brissy, With Love
Last week, we announced that we had teamed up with our pals at The Triffid for From Brissy, With Love – a fire-relief benefit concert raising money for the firefighting and wildlife rescue effort. We’ve been blown away by the response, with tickets to the show (which includes performances by Alex the Astronaut, The Grates, Thelma Plum, Kira Puru and Tia Gostelow) snatched up in record time. If you missed out on a ticket, don’t fret – the day will also include a bunch of festivities in The Triffid’s beer garden that folks can enjoy. From 2:00 pm you’ll be able to catch live-music performances as well as food, drinks and a raffle hawking some incredible prizes. We hope to see you there!
