Pavement Whispers: Vol 11 February 17

From whispers of organic eateries to gourmet delis, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Green Bees Organics
Local health nuts will soon have another nourishing venue to add to Brisbane’s growing list of wholefood eateries, with the opening of organic fast-food restaurant Green Bees Organics set for Saturday February 21. From gluten-free open pies to organic, dairy-free salads and sugar-free desserts, the food menu will be complemented by cold-pressed juices, green smoothies, organic iced tea and fairtrade coffee. The West End eatery will be open from 8:30 am to 8:00 pm Monday to Saturday.

New Sourced Grocer sibling venues
After a few minor delays, Sourced Grocer’s Jerome Batten is getting closer to opening two new venues in South Brisbane. Situated beneath the Austin apartments, Jerome’s spots will sit alongside Julius Pizzeria, with an eatery on Grey Street and bar tucked away on Fish Lane. The 50-seat eatery is looking to open in the first week of March, serving breakfast and lunch through the day and dinner planned for the not-too-distant future. The small laneway bar is due to open a few weeks later, pouring specialty cocktails and beers alongside small and interesting bar snacks. Look out on The Weekend Edition in the coming weeks for full details.

Thorn Street Kitchen
Sisters Rigela and Spica Delorino are jumping into Brisbane’s cafe scene with the tentatively titled Thorn Street Kitchen, an eatery that will focus on simple food and quality coffee. The Kangaroo Point establishment will boast a menu of all-day breakfast meals, lunch options, cakes and sweets with coffee supplied by Allpress Espresso. The cafe will be located at the bottom of the Peninsula Apartments on Thorn Street and is currently undergoing a fit-out, with doors looking to open in late March.

Poppy’s Pantry
Regulars were heartbroken to hear that after 13 years of trade, beloved bakery, cafe and specialty grocer Poppy’s Basket closed its doors on Grey Street in South Bank on December 31 last year. However, the sad news has led to new beginnings, with new cafe and deli Poppy’s Pantry planned for Newstead. The smaller venue is expected to open by March.

Bungalow 4171
Fans of Bulimba cafe Bungalow 4171 will be happy to hear that the popular coffee and breakfast spot is now fully licensed and will launch a new late-night dining menu on Thursday February 26, with tapas available from 3:00 pm and a new dinner menu on offer from 6:00 pm. If that isn’t enough good news for one day, Bungalow 4171 is also launching a brand-new breakfast and lunch menu today.

Vespa Pizza
New Farm residents – don’t freak out. Vespa Pizza is closing its Merthyr Road location on Sunday February 22, but thankfully it is in anticipation of a move to Cunningham Street in Newstead, opening Tuesday March 3. The new space is looking to seat 150 diners in a stripped-back, rustic-styled interior and a large alfresco area. The same beloved pizzas will be on offer, with pasta dishes on the cards as well as a lunch menu to come.
