Pavement Whispers: Volume 252 December 10
From news of a new beachy burger joint for Brisbane City to the last days of a colourful pop-up, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …
Betty’s Burgers Albert Street
You can never have too much of a good thing and this applies doubly so when referring to Betty’s Burger’s locations. It’s been a huge 2019 for the Sunshine Coast-born burger chain, which opened new locations at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre and Howard Smith Wharves in January and May, respectively – plus several more locations interstate. Now, the beachy burger slingers are looking to open one more Brisbane joint before year’s end, with a new location on Albert Street set to arrive just before Christmas. Taking over the space once home to The Coffee Club, this Betty’s Burgers location is set to be Brisbane’s biggest – 170 seats are projected for the inner-city outlet. The news coincides with the arrival of two tasty menu additions exclusive to Betty’s Queensland locations, with the Noosa Classic Surf (Angus beef, lightly battered prawns, lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese and special sauce) and the Betty’s Classic Vegan (crispy fried brown-rice and vegetable patty, tomato, pickles, onion, spicy mayo, lettuce) shaping up to be some summer snacking staples. We’ll have a closer look at Betty’s Burgers Albert Street once it opens. Stay tuned!
Six Ninety Bar & Eatery
Fortitude Valley is set to score a new cocktail and tapas bar next week, with final touches being applied to Six Ninety Bar & Eatery on Ann Street. Operated by a team of seasoned publicans, Six Ninety will occupy the old Apothecaries Hall near Bakery Lane – the former home of The Apo and, more recently, TSO Lounge & Dining. Ownership has retained the venue’s charming heritage aesthetic, highlighting the original structure across the two-level floor plan, boasting a ground-level bar and kitchen and an upstairs bar and function space. Six Ninety will be a cocktail-oriented watering hole, with a list of 22 concoctions on hand including five signature sips. The food menu encompasses a collection of share plates and tapas perfect for splitting with your crew, with a clutch of matched wines available for a comprehensive drinking and dining experience. Six Ninety Bar & Eatery will officially launch on Wednesday December 18, and will be open from 11:00 am for lunch, dinner and drinks. We’ll have a closer look for you soon!
Fredericks
Back in September, West Village welcomed colourful cocktail pop-up Fredericks to its midst. The brainchild of Paul McGivern and Bailee Dewes (La Lune Wine Co, Corella), Daniel and Amelia Miletic (One Fish Two Fish), and design duo Jon Dowding and Chrissy Feld brought a dose of neon-lit hospitality to the thriving food and lifestyle precinct, but now the Factory Lane bar is calling time on its tenure for 2019. Fredericks will officially close on Friday December 20, but not before a couple more weeks of festive celebrations. From now until close, the bar will be offering a new cocktail menu with some holiday-themed concoctions. Stop in and sample the Summer Snow (berry-infused gin, strawberry, lime, salt), the O Tannenbaum (apple cider, vodka, lemon) and the decadent Rum Ball (spiced rum, coconut, orange bitters, chocolate) before Fredericks shutters.
Haven Newstead’s Food Legend’s Open Day
If you’re stressing about the prospect of having to cook Christmas lunch this year, Newstead’s foodie hub Haven has an event you’d do well to add to your calendar. On Saturday December 14, several chefs from Haven’s popular eateries will be hosting several hour-long, free masterclasses in which they’ll teach attendees how to conquer Christmas. Throughout the day, e’cco bistro’s head chef and founder Philip Johnson will instruct guests how to master his signature whole-baked salmon in salt crust, and Short Order’s head chef Callum Rogers will show the ins and outs of cooking butterflied organic chickens. Salt Meats Cheese chef Silvio Bazzanella will have attendees creating handmade gnocchi with seasonal seafood, while Miele’s culinary experts Isobel Dreisenstock and Kym Pitt will teach guests how to whip up the perfect pavlova. Each class is limited to 30 attendees, so be quick and click here to register your interest.
