Pavement Whispers: Volume 83 August 2

From whispers of frites eateries to Greek street eats, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Jimmy Grants
Missing your daily George Calombaris fix now that MasterChef is over? If you live on the Gold Coast, he can soon be part of your life every day again – well, his food at least. George’s casual eatery Jimmy Grants is making its way to Robina in late October/early November, bringing with it its mouth-watering Greek street food. The menu will be similar to Jimmy Grants’ Melbourne locations, with many of the favourite souvas and salads on offer, as well as a few new items. Look out on The Weekend Edition Gold Coast for more details soon!

Fritzenberger
Curious to know what will be taking over Casablanca’s former corner spot on Caxton Street? The answer is Fritzenberger, a – as the name might imply – frites and burger brew pub due to open early September. Fritzenberger comes from Steve Minon and Matthew Bailey, the clever guys behind Harajuku Gyoza and Nitrogenie. Matt Fosker (ex Story Bridge Hotel) will be heading up the kitchen, with some early menu conception help from Ryan Squires. A major emphasis will be on several kinds of frites (fine by us), and burgers will focus on classic flavours using the best local ingredients. The pub will also feature a microbrewery, where sessionable craft beers will be brewed on site and rotated through the taps.

The Croft House Town Kitchen & Bar
Brisbane City is set to get a new watering hole, with The Croft House Town Kitchen & Bar set to open at the end of August. The relaxed English-inspired venue will be taking over the former Palettes site beneath The Sebel on Charlotte and Albert Streets, and will focus on local craft beers and wines, coffee from Wolff Coffee and food created using regional produce and local butchers. The space is getting a modern refresh, featuring splashes of timber and striking herringbone tiles. Keep an eye on The Weekend Edition for more details soon.

Munich Brauhaus
If our schnitzel round-up didn’t give you a hint, we really love Bavarian food. So we’re pretty excited to hear that Brisbane is getting its first Munich Brauhaus! The eatery and bar will be taking over three levels of South Bank’s iconic Allgas Building, and is set to open by Christmas this year. Munich Brauhaus will feature a number of different bar spaces, including a beer garden and rooftop bar, and will be a similar offering to its Melbourne sibling. Of course expect Bavarian-style eats, including pretzels, house-made sausages and our beloved schnitz. The venue comes from Urban Purveyor Group, the brains behind Bavarian Bier Café and Saké on Eagle Street.

Il Verde
As we eagerly anticipate the forthcoming opening of King Street’s first dining destinations The George Bar and Bistro, GG Espresso and Fat Dumpling, news has come down the pipeline of another restaurant, opening in the redeveloped Fortitude Valley precinct in September. Il Verde will take up residence on King Street later in the year, offering modern Italian cuisine in a casual setting, with indoor dining, bar seating and outdoor lounges bedecked in earthy, green tones. Details are still being kept under wraps, but keep your eyes on The Weekend Edition for more King Street information in the coming weeks.
