Pavement Whispers: Volume 271 August 18
From news of a new burger and mac’n’cheese dispensary for Woolloongabba to a fried-chicken joint coming to Newmarket, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know (while also supporting our local hospitality industry). When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …
Mac From Way Back
Before we get into this juicy tidbit of news, we’d like to you indulge us – just for a moment. Click this link, turn your speakers up and get ready to dance, because today we’re celebrating the return of the Mac! Okay, to be fair Mac From Way Back never left – the mobile vendor of heavenly baked mac’n’cheese and mouth-watering smash burgers has been slinging the goods on the streets for yonks. After earning a legion of fans through appearances at food-truck gatherings, foodie festivals and pop-ups, the Mac From Way Back team has finally secured a permanent home in the heart of Woollongabba’s famed Logan Road cul-de-sac dining precinct, taking over the old Sorellina space next to The Baker’s Arms. With a new home comes a new menu – the Mac From Way Back crew has assembled a jaw-dropping list of eats to celebrate the arrival, headlined by its famous mac’n’cheese with toppings and selection of burgers (single smash patty, double patty, Nashville hot fried chicken and crumbed mushroom with grilled saganaki). Available alongside these formidable feasting choices will be breathtaking extras like the Feral Fries (chips topped with mac, bacon, ketchup and chilli mayo), bolognese-loaded fries (chips with mac, bolognese sauce and liquid cheese), woodfired mac’n’cheese pizza, giant mozzarella sticks, and desserts (think cheesecake sticks coated in chocolate and giant dessert pizza slices stacked with decadent toppings like KitKats and doughnuts). Mac From Way Back is tentatively scheduled to open in late September – rest assured we’ll have a close-up look once it arrives.
Wing Fix Newmarket
Last week we shared the news that Broken Hearts Burger Club was set to open in Morningside in October, taking over the Wing Fix space on Wynnum Road. While it’s true that the American comfort-food concept will be wrapping up operations in Morningside on Monday August 31, there’s a silver lining with the recent announcement that Wing Fix will be opening a new location in Newmarket in November. Snagging a convenient spot at Newmarket Village, Wing Fix will be transporting its popular menu of eats to the northside, including its acclaimed range of crispy fried chicken (doused in Wing Fix’s signature sauces, which include classic buffalo, honey-soy, garlic parmesan and fiery Nashville hot), selection of stacked burgers (truffle cheeseburger, anyone?) and loaded fries. Fried-chicken fanatics that live on the other side of the river can still get their Wing Fix fix at its Coorparoo Square venue, which opened earlier this year. Stay tuned for more details on both of these locations on The Weekend Edition soon!
nodo’s Carindale pop-up
If you’ve been craving a hit of nodo’s dreamy donut goodness, but don’t want to fight the crowds that constantly assemble at its popular cafes, we’ve got some good news for you. The beloved sweet spot has opened a pop-up kiosk in the heart of Westfield Carindale, hawking nodo’s entire range of freshly baked, gluten-free doughnuts as well as a selection of gluten-free pantry items. The pop-up will be running until Thursday September 3, so if you’ve been dying to sink your teeth into one of nodo’s blueberry lemon cheesecake, beetroot and chocolate, or the limited-edition strawberry s’mores doughnut, seek out the kiosk on level G (right outside of Coles) and order a doughnut or six.
Stokehouse Q’s closure
In case you missed it, last week the Van Haandel Group, owners of acclaimed riverside restaurant Stokehouse Q, announced that the restaurant had officially closed, citing pandemic-related border closures as the driving force behind the restaurant’s inability to reopen after shuttering in March. The statement also revealed that Sydney’s Fink Group would be moving its hatted inner-city restaurant OTTO Brisbane to Stokehouse Q’s waterfront space. The restaurant will continue to operate at 480 Queen until the end of the year, before relocating to South Bank in early 2021. Click here to get more details.
