Sustainable Table asks us to Give a Fork!

Sustainable Table is asking us to consider the seafood that goes onto our barbecues and plates with its inaugural Give a Fork! campaign. With the aim to highlight issues within the seafood industry, Give a Fork! spreads awareness so consumers can make ethical and environmentally conscious decisions when it comes to consuming seafood. From October 7–14, get involved by hosting a sustainable seafood or vegetarian dinner party, asking your guests to donate what they would have spent on a night out. The money raised will help Sustainable Table continue to build a fair and sustainable food system through educational resources and events and development projects locally and abroad. Restaurants can also sign up to be part of Give a Fork!, so participants can choose to dine out inside of cooking at home. Local restaurants can email [email protected] to sign up. more

In season: barbecue mango cheeks with lamb

If there were two things that symbolised the sweaty season in Brisbane, they’d have to be mangoes and barbecues. The waiting game is almost over, with the emblematic first tray of mangoes set to go to a good home at the 16th annual Brisbane Markets Mango Auction fundraiser from 7:00–9:00am at the Brisbane Produce Market on Thursday October 10. Fire up the barbecue this weekend and help support the Greengrocer Mango Act of Kindness campaign while you’re collecting your ingredients. Simply make a $2 donation at any participating grocery store – which includes Ashgrove Fresh, Taringa’s Naturally Fruit, Fresh Sensations Chermside, Kenmore Fresh and The Standard Market Company – before Monday October 7 to help raise funds for Diabetes Queensland and Life Education Queensland. more

The Street Photographer: Alfredo’s Pizzeria

Never one to shy away from flavour, Alfredo’s Pizzeria has launched a new menu for summer, along with a Vespa delivery service. Warm-weather Italian favourites like grilled peaches wrapped in prosciutto come nestled in a salad, while arancini come stuffed with succulent mushrooms and a stringy centre of mozzarella. We hear the new American Idiot pizza of braised beef short rib, gorgonzola, pancetta and barbecue sauce is well-worth the napkin-heavy mess it leaves you in. One Eleven launches modern grill restaurant

After opening less than a year ago in the One One One building in Brisbane City, One Eleven has shed its former image and opted for an entirely new menu and approach. In collaboration with new head chef Mathias Andersson, founder Philip Johnson has pared back the restaurant’s menu to create an offering specifically tailored to the corporate crowd. Taking inspiration from the modern bar and grill restaurants peppered throughout Singapore and Hong Kong, the bistro has simplified the ordering process with the goal of speeding up the wait time for time-constrained city workers. The new menu is split into sections, inviting diners to build their own meals by selecting their protein of choice, an accompanying side and a finishing sauce. A focus on local, organic produce sees classic combinations like 180-day grain-fed Angus eye fillet adorned with red wine jus and a green bean with freekeh… more

Go green with a kale and quinoa salad

It may have become a buzzword of late, but kale is bringing all the health nuts to the yard for very good reason. Packed with powerful nutrients, the leafy green’s vitamin and mineral count has seen it progress from the back of the organic store to front-row shelves in supermarkets and grocers across the country. There are many different ways to get your fill of the so-called ‘queen of greens’ – be it a bowl of spicy kale chips or a refreshing green smoothie. Combine it with a selection of your favourite veggies and nourishing quinoa to create a filling salad ideal for lunch or dinner. Try the recipe below, substituting the pumpkin, capsicum and onion for any vegetables of your choosing. more

Pay homage to the chile pepper

“We love chile and we will die with chile in our hands.” It may be an audacious claim, but the pepper devotees featured in the intriguing documentary The Chile Film are unwavering. The film, which has been selected to feature in the upcoming NYC Food Film Festival 2013, explores how the chile pepper first made its way to New Mexico and how it has impacted the state’s culture ever since. In fact, in 1983 Senator Pete Domenici rose before the US Senate to declare that the New Mexican style of spelling chilli as ‘chile’ was correct – and it was the rest of America that was wrong. Take a journey with director Kelly Brinn to meet the passionate chile farmers of New Mexico and discover newfound respect for the humble pepper. more
