Sip coffee for a good cause at Orange Sky Laundry’s new coffee cart
For many of us coffee is an everyday essential that we often take for granted, along with clean clothes, showers, and a safe place to sleep at night. For Brisbane’s homeless, these ‘essentials’ don’t come by quite so easily. Since 2014, Orange Sky Laundry has been working hard to reconnect homeless Australians with the greater community, providing a free mobile laundry service and platform for conversations. As of this week, you can help this mission each day, just by grabbing a cup of joe.
The next time you’re in Windsor with a desperate need for caffeine, make your way down Victoria Street. What you’ll find is a cute little three-wheeled yellow coffee cart parked in Orange Sky Laundry’s garage, serving up the coffee that you seek, and manned by a friendly chap named John who will welcome you with a warm smile. The pop-up fundraising coffee cart will be open from 5:30 am Monday to Friday, and 100 percent of the funds raised will go towards Orange Sky’s mission to improve the lives of Brisbane’s homeless. Orange Sky has nabbed the cute little Piaggo coffee cart from Italy, which serves as the coffee counter for the espresso machine, and as of next week the cart will also serve ice-cold slushies, frappes and iced coffee to help you beat the heat.
Since its inception in 2014, Orange Sky Laundry has expanded to offer ten services across Australia, and now does more than 6.9 tonnes of laundry every week from its mobile vans. Better yet – while our friends on the street are getting their clothes washed, they can sit down on one of the orange chairs to have a positive and genuine conversation with Orange Sky’s volunteers. More than 1300 hours of conversation take place each week, helping to connect the country’s homeless with the wider community.
