Settle in for a long champagne lunch at Ascot’s new One Fifty

It’s a pretty sensational feeling when you head out to lunch … and then suddenly it’s afternoon drinks … and before you know it the sun has gone and you’re ordering again for dinner. Just in time for the festive season, Racecourse Road is welcoming the perfect place to take you through from sunny afternoon to balmy evening, and it goes by the name of One Fifty.

twe-onefifty-08The space
Positioned under the shade of a gargantuan fairy-lit fig tree, One Fifty is a breath of fresh air on Racecourse Road. The bar and eatery is the latest venue from Coats Group (The Jetty Oxford and South Bank, Eleven Rooftop Bar), the combined minds of restaurateur Jason Coats and wife Katie, Jason’s long-standing general manager Tracey Rayner and husband Kwan Fong, and Stuart Carlton-Smith. One Fifty has overhauled the space that for many years was home to Baguette – and ‘overhauled’ is perhaps an understatement. The restaurant has been stripped right back – think marble bench-tops, white-washed walls, timber details and splashes of green. The impressive front bar beckons passersby to perch on a stool and share a bottle (or two), illuminated by the sloping glass roof that will soon be veiled by a cascading waterfall overhead. Beyond a wall of wine and fancy fiddle-leaf fig is the second bar and light-filled back dining area, plus an open-air courtyard and private ten-seat dining room. Head to The Street Photographer for a closer look!

twe-onefifty-03The food and drink
One Fifty is the kind of place you walk into where you know that your lunch is going to be a long one – in a good way. Cocktails are a great way to start, with tropical tantilisers such as watermelon mint spritzers and vanilla pineapple margaritas, or you can head straight to a glass (again we say, or two) of 2007 Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque, which One Fifty pours exclusively. Much like its interiors, One Fifty’s menu is fresh and light. Smaller bites include chicken liver parfait with cherry compote and crostini, pepper-crusted and rare-grilled yellow-fin tuna, and crispy soft-shell crab with green papaya, Asian herbs and nam jim dressing. The house-made pasta changes daily in the more substantial options, and you’ll also find the likes of roasted chicken with leek soubise, pearl barley and prosciutto, and wood-smoked salmon with baby beetroot, vanilla-poached pear, goats curd and candied walnuts. Oh, and sides are a must – fried sweet corn with lime and chilli butter, anyone?
