Don liederhosen for pretzels and beer at Oktoberfest
Traditionally, Oktoberfest is a 16-day celebration of all things Bavarian and beer-related held (funnily enough) in September. If you couldn’t afford the plane fare this year to reach its home in Munich, don’t fret, as Brisbane hosts its own version, which is just as popular as the original.
For two weekends, the RNA showgrounds will transform into a German wonderland, complete with maypoles, traditional wooden flooring, wreaths and plenty of long tables. Hundreds of Brisbane locals, adorned in traditional German dress of dirndls and liederhosen, will descend on the arena to enjoy German food, entertainment and plenty of beer.
Indulge in steins of some of Germany’s most unique boutique liquor, and sample famous fare from the nation including delicious cakes, pretzels, sauerkraut and pork knuckle. Serenading you while you drink and eat yourself into a stupour will be a bundle of talented yodellers and traditional Oktoberfest band Münchner Buam, which has flown in especially for the occasion.
Guys and gals with a competitive edge can also prove their worth in the competitions held on each Saturday, with Miss Oktoberfest for prospective Fräuleins and the Bavarian Strongman Competition for gents. For those wishing to embrace the Bavarian, Oktoberfest opens at 4:00 pm on Friday and at 11:00 am over the weekend.
