Specialty coffee roaster O’GaBee Coffee & Co opens a new caffeinery in Chermside
Westfield Chermside is a big place – there’s a lot of ground to cover and hundreds of shops demanding your attention. It can be a draining effort walking from end to end, but thankfully O’GaBee Coffee & Co.’s brand-new caffeinery is now open to help keep energy levels high. O’GaBee’s award-winning roasts and menu of flavourful frappes and brunch classics are worth making any excuse to go for a shop – here’s what’s on offer …
When it comes to advertising its awards and accolades, the team behind local roastery and cafe crew O’GaBee Coffee & Co. isn’t shy – it proudly displays its medals (and they’ve earned a few) on the front of its espresso machine. The roasting outfit, which started in 2018, has rapidly grown into an acclaimed powerhouse in the making, earning bronze and silver medals at the Golden Bean Awards in 2020 and 2021. What’s the secret to success? If you ask O’GaBee’s ownership, they’ll tell you it’s likely thanks to their dedication to perfecting lighter roasts. Using premium specialty grade beans from Brazil, Colombia and Costa Rica, O’GaBee’s blends offer a sweeter sip that’s easy to love – even the more robust single-origin pours offer something for the black coffee-sipping purists. While critical acclaim and relative exclusivity have helped give O’GaBee a cult following thus far, the roaster is now spreading its wings and concentrating on building a greater presence in Brisbane’s cafe landscape. Earlier this year the team opened a brand-new cafe and coffee joint in the heart of Westfield Chermside, snagging a space near the centre’s northern end. The O’GaBee crew has linked up with Ni Design to create a modern space that sticks out from the neighbouring stores, with rendered walls, arched ceilings, back-lit shelves and chic modular furnishings in the concourse seating area giving the cafe a singular look and feel.
O’GaBee’s offering is, naturally, headlined by its coffee selection. The Chermside cafe offers two blends – the silver-award-winning Blend 2, which boasts a strong dark-roast flavour with hints of chocolate and plum, and the Chermside blend (exclusive to the cafe) that is a medium-to-light roast that is perfect for milky brews. A rotating selection of single-origin filter brews are available, with new releases dropping seasonally, while O’GaBee’s cold brew is made using Nicaraguan beans. The rest of the cafe’s beverage menu features an assortment of frappes (including flavours like matcha and creme brulee), juices and smoothies – so there’s plenty for non-coffee drinkers. As for the food, the cafe’s cabinet is stocked with an assortment of grab-and-go sandwiches and snacks, as well as cakes supplied by Bloom Patisserie. An a la carte menu showcases an assortment of scrumptious staples including eggs Benedict, shakshouka and Angus beef burgers.
