New Farm Confectionery sweetens up Brunswick Street

As kids we had that classic Willy Wonka dream of winning a golden ticket and gaining free rein of a chocolate factory. Now adults, we may pretend that our dreams are much more sensible and profound, but you know you get a little spring in your step at the thought of an endless supply of sweet treats. With a vision to introduce Brisbane to the world of adult confectionery, New Farm Confectionery has opened the doors to its first permanent store off Brunswick Street.

The brainchild of local lass Jodie Neilson, New Farm Confectionery originally started satisfying sweet tooths at the Eagle Farm and Eat Street Markets around 18 months ago. A qualified chef, Jodie always had a passion for the sweeter side, and after travelling to France and marvelling in the range of adult confectionery, she decided it was time Australian grown ups indulged in something a little more decadent than a sweet, vibrant-coloured gelatinous reptile.

After searching for the perfect space (in New Farm, of course), Jodie came across a pokey little spot on the side of the New Farm Cinemas. Sitting just off Brunswick Street on Barker Street, New Farm Confectionery’s new home is just as sweet as its wares. The quaint space is just right, with copper-piped shelves displaying rows of treats, subway-tiled walls announcing the day’s milkshake flavours, and a welcoming counter topped with jars of marshmallows and chocolate delights. Beyond that lies Jodie’s kitchen, where she makes and packages each and every sweet treat by hand and in small batches, using locally sourced ingredients where possible (the couverture chocolate comes from Belgium) and using no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. And to top it all off – everything currently sold at New Farm Confectionery is also gluten-free.

Despite its small space, New Farm Confectionery is certainly not short on variety – this is where your Willy Wonka dreams can become a reality. If chocolate bark is your indulgence of choice you can take your pick from dark chocolate with raspberry or peppermint, milk chocolate fruit and nut, or milk, dark or white chocolate peanut brittle bark. The caramel selection includes salted varieties, passionfruit or ginger and lime, while nougats are filled with cranberry and almond, rose and pistachio, and orange blossom and macadamia. Crunch on a shard of peanut, walnut or macadamia brittle, munch on a nugget of golden honeycomb, or bite into a slice of rocky road. Marshmallows come in seven flavours too. And if your sweet cravings are of the liquid variety ask for a milkshake or hot chocolate, all made with the in-house confectionery. Then take a seat outside and watch the world go by, content that you finally got to be Charlie Bucket for the day.
