As anyone who has started and failed a healthy eating resolution will tell you, eating right isn’t always stimulating to the taste palate. Thankfully for us picky eaters, eating wholesome food doesn’t have to mean steamed broccoli for every meal. Mylk + Ko on Merthyr Road is making eating mindfully easy with a range of colourful and tasty dishes that go far beyond acai bowls (they’ve got those too). Sure, red velvet waffles and stacked milkshakes don’t sound like they’d be good for your waistline, but you’d be surprised. Mylk + Ko is opening today (Thursday February 2) and is ready to enlighten you.

For Ines Scholtes, her first foray into hospitality followed an unconventional path. After completing a law degree and travelling the world, Ines chose to experiment with her passion for home cooking and fitness by creating an Instagram account that catalogued her favourite recipes and healthy living ideas. It wasn’t long before people took notice and within a year her feed had racked up 20,000 followers. It was at this point that the idea for a cafe emerged – one that focused on providing wholesome food based on recipes that had earned significant social traction in a way that was easily accessible. Mylk + Ko is the end result of that idea – a cafe situated on Merthyr Road that boasts a bright and comfortable interior and a penchant for plating up dishes that aren’t simply prototypical fitspo fodder, but rather a balanced and comprehensive offering that emphasises enjoyment.

Mylk + Ko’s menu is divided into three main sections – cold dishes, hot dishes and drinks. With a vast majority of meals being gluten free, dairy free, vegan or a combination of the three, those with dietary requirements are easily catered for. The cold menu is where you will find granola and acai bowls, each of which is topped with a range of colourful ingredients. The Golden Gaytime bowl features banana, coconut, cacao nibs and clean caramel sauce, while the Recovery bowl is chock-full of apple, kiwi, strawberries, chia seeds and goji berries. The hot menu is launching in a week’s time, and will feature dishes that have been causing a stir through word of mouth. Red-velvet waffles, lemon meringue pancakes and Snickers mousse are a few of the fun options to come, complemented with savoury choices including carrot and chickpea pancakes and waffle nachos. On the drinks side patrons can select from Allpress Espresso and organic loose-leaf tea from Mayde, as well as juices cold pressed to order, smoothies and super mylkshakes, which are topped with Cocowhip, raw treats and syrup. Iced Vovo milkshakes? Don’t mind if we do!
