Munich Brauhaus delivers steins, snags and schnitzels to South Bank
One of South Bank’s most-anticipated arrivals has finally turned on its taps. Munich Brauhaus – a multi-level beer hall from the Rockpool Dining Group – opened its doors last Friday May 4, wasting no time in kicking off Oktoberfest celebrations months early. The venue is bringing a whole host of Bavarian goods to the table – we’re talking pretzels as big as your face, schnitzels by the score, gargantuan pork knuckles and succulent sausages. Oh, and bier – lots of bier.
The first thing you’ll notice about Stanley Street Plaza’s newest resident is its size – Munich Brauhaus is not a small-scale endeavour. The Rockpool Group (Bavarian Bier Café, Saké) has put in the hard yards to lovingly craft an alehouse that is imbued with a lived-in heritage feel. Similarly to the other Munich Brauhaus locations interstate, this South Bank taphouse boasts an alpine aesthetic communicated across the Allgas Building’s heritage features of high ceilings, exposed timber trusses and exposed brick, as well as Bavarian touches such as decorative bier barrels, a stein chandelier and plenty of communal seating. Drinkers and diners can sprawl out across two second-floor bier halls, a sizeable downstairs bar area and a 250-seat bier garden.
The number-one rule of Munich Brauhaus is that you must come hungry. Much like the venue itself, the portion sizes are substantial and run the gamut of filling feeds – and Munich Brauhaus’ Bavarian-inspired signature dishes are famous for a reason. The crackling pork belly, crispy pork knuckle and tasting platters are difficult to look past, but with six schnitzel varieties, ten kinds of sausages and a host of non-Bavarian bites on offer, choosing is not an easy task. The easiest way around this conundrum is to try it all, with three kinds of colossal platters topped with a bit of everything ideal for sharing amongst groups. The likes of giant pretzels, mac and cheese balls, create-your-own salads, spicy squid, wraps and chicken wings are also available if you need a bite to pair with your bier.
What’s a Bavarian-themed bier hall without bier? At Munich Brauhaus, equal importance is placed on foamy golden ales and food, with 36 taps pouring 17 draught biers by the stein. Rockpool Dining Group’s own Urban Craft Brewing Co. is supplying numerous craft biers, bolstered by full-bodied drops from Hofbräu, Spaten, Paulaner, Franziskaner and Löwenbräu. Beyond bier, Munich Brauhaus stocks a huge range of schnapps, wines and cocktails to choose from, meaning no one needs be left out of a hearty prost at session’s start.
Munich Brauhaus is now open, with Stanley Street Plaza decorated in Oktoberfest regalia until the end of the month. Search for the blue and white streamers, or check the Stumble Guide for more info.
