Make your own aromatic curries with the help of Mudgeeraba Spices
Born to a Sri Lankan father and Chinese mother, Maria Tate grew up in a small village that was a melting pot of Asian cuisine. A love of cooking was in her blood from a young age where she was exposed to recipes from all over India and Sri Lanka, a lot of which are used today in her business Mudgeeraba Spices.
Mudgeeraba Spices started in 1993 on her ten-acre block of land in Mudgeeraba in the Gold Coast hinterland. Maria’s love of gardening matched perfectly with her love of cooking and the block was soon covered with curry leaves, vegetables, lemons, limes, mangoes, chillies, lemongrass, turmeric and galangal. Today Mudgeeraba Spices still uses some of this home-grown produce in the production of its curry blends, curry pastes, pickles, chutneys, sambols and chilli pastes. All of these products are authentic to the Indian and Asian foods that were Maria’s inspiration growing up including North Indian, South Indian, Keralan, Malay, Sri Lankan, Thai, Rajasthani and Kashmiri.
Maria is passionate about using the old traditional and timely methods in her range of more than 200 different product lines. Making her products from only the freshest fruit and vegetables, Maria uses only natural preservatives such as olive oil and apple cider vinegar. The curry blends are made from the best whole seeds and ground from whole spice to guarantee the flavour and quality.
Maria’s younger daughter Marissa Moore also loves to get in on the cooking action and together they also run The Windmill at Mudgeeraba, a store for their spices as well as cooking classes. Mudgeeraba Spices has been longtime market stallholder and still attends the Manly Farmers Markets, Carseldine Farmers and Artisan Markets and Red Hill Farmers Markets as well as a number of regional markets. Stop by and say hello to Maria at your local market and pick up some spices and condiments or sample her market stall hot food while you wander around.
