Say hola to the mother of all tacos at Mucho Mexicano
If there’s one thing we can’t get enough of, it’s Mexican food. How can you say no to guacamole, right? But if your thoughts immediately go to the standard taco and burrito situation, think again – this is nacho average Mexican restaurant. See what I did there? Introducing South Bank’s newest resident, Mucho Mexicano.
Mucho Mexicano is the latest project from Olé Restaurant Group, and joins sibling venues Olé, The Sangria Bar and Mister Paganini in the Little Stanley and Grey Street precinct. The restaurant looks like a fiesta you want to be invited to – brightly coloured papel picado-style banners line the ceiling, hanging pots of greenery swing in the breeze, and local artist Sarah Jane Bradley has hand painted vibrant murals on pillars throughout the space, featuring Frida Kahlo, iguanas and flowering cacti.
Head chef Wayne Mountford has designed the menu for amigos – modern Mexican communal feasting. Street food starters include grilled corn on the cob with queso and chipotle aioli, Moreton Bay bug tostadas, and individual tacos topped with the likes of sticky wagyu beef, battered snapper and baja chicken. Hungrier hombres can move on to larger plates, including quesadillas, nachos, grilled prawns and chicken fajitas. Really love your tacos? Then you need The Mother of All Tacos. Choose from chipotle braised beef, crispy pork belly al pastor or slow-cooked lamb shoulder, served with tortillas and designed to share. And the chefs at Mucho Mexicano aren’t fools – they know you want the guac, so they’re going to give it to you, along with salsa fresca and sour cream. All this sound like too much to choose from? ¿Por qué no los dos? The chefs will put together a banquet selection for you to share. Just one warning – make sure you leave room for an ice-cream taco. It wouldn’t be a true fiesta without tequila, sangria and margaritas, all of which are on the menu, as well as wine, cider and cerveza, both Mexican and local.
