Fortitude Valley says hello to Mister Fitz’s Finest Ice Cream

The wonderful mind of Damian Griffiths has imagined up a new addition to his quirky collection of eateries. Already the master of kooky cakes, delectable doughnuts and mammoth milkshakes, Damian is putting the cherry on top of his dessert smorgasbord, with the opening of Mister Fitz’s Finest Ice Cream in Fortitude Valley.

Cast your mind back to the ice-cream of your childhood. It was creamy. It was dense. It was gosh-darn delicious. And it definitely wasn’t like most of the ice-creams we eat today. Reminiscing of the ice-cream his grandmother once made from scratch, and inspired by an old-fashioned ice-creamery he discovered in San Francisco, Damian Griffiths set out on a mission – to deliver the fine people of Brisbane the ice-cream they deserve. From there, Mister Fitz’s Finest Ice Cream was created, with the first location opening on Little Street behind Les Bubbles.

The ice-creamery focuses on original-recipe ice-cream, and pasteurises its own product in house. Using fresh milk, cream and free-range eggs – the way the real stuff should be made – the ice-cream and ice-cream sandwiches at Mister Fitz’s are all made by hand. Your icy treat can be consumed in a cup or cone, as soft serve, sandwiched between cookies, plonked on brownies, or taken home in a tub. And if you’re really on a dairy bender, signature milkshakes similar to those at Chester Street Bakery and Bar are also on offer. Flavour names are as old school as the ice-cream recipe – expect to find Hypnotize (banana, brown sugar and bacon), Slick Rick (butterscotch), Going to Miami (passionfruit mojito) and The Grandmaster (chocolate) on the menu. You can top your creamy delight with crazy toppings such as candied bacon (yum), French fries (YUM) and unicorn crumbs (we didn’t ask for clarification, but yum), or choose from cookie flavours including red velvet, gluten-free coconut and chocolate, and peanut butter and jelly.

Mister Fitz’s Finest Ice Cream is the second instalment (after Les Bubbles) of Damian’s wider urban renewal project for the area, which will continue to evolve in the coming months. Never one to settle down, the restaurateur also opened Doughnut Time’s first airport kiosk at Brisbane’s Virgin terminal yesterday, and has announced that South Bank’s Doughnut Time and Mister Fitz kiosks will open before the year ends.
