Miss Sophia’s Gelateria brings Froot-Loop gelato and chocolate fountains to Kedron

Kedron cafe Farm House has been a stalwart of the suburb’s dining scene, and now owner Amanda Scott has doubled up on the local love, establishing an authentic gelato spot right next door. Miss Sophia’s Gelateria is bringing a dash of whimsy and fantasy to Kedron, blending traditional Italian techniques with imaginative flavour pairings and blessing the suburb with a colourful array of decadent treats.

The story
Since the days of Farmer Joe’s fruit shop, the rustic structure near the corner of Somerset and Gympie Roads has served as a vital hub for Kedron locals. Popular cafe Farm House opened at the location two years ago, and owner Amanda Scott has strived to maintain the spirit of Farmer Joe’s in the community. Amanda’s latest concept Miss Sophia’s Gelateria – a neighbouring Italian-style creamery named after her daughter – is inspired by her own experience working in ice-cream shops, and has been conceived as a salute to the Italian community and a further continuation of the fresh-food legacy left behind by Farmer Joe’s.

The space
The Scott’s haven’t embarked on the venture half-heartedly – the space has been equipped with professional gelato-making gear from Carpigiani, as well as numerous blast freezers and deep freezers. What’s more, the team has also been taught the proper craft by two Italian gelato chefs. The space has been imbued with a lively aesthetic, including a feature wall decorated with illustrations of fresh fruit, while another boasts a scrabble board listing the various flavours available. Limited seating is available inside and out, which is good because you’ll want to sit down to savour each of Miss Sophia’s Gelateria’s flavours.

The food and drink
The gelateria’s serving freezer stocks 20 flavours at a time each day, each conceived by Amanda’s daughter Amelia. Choices range from classics such as salted caramel, pistachio, vanilla bean, milk and cookies and choc mint, to more boutique flavours such as Froot Loops, ricotta and fresh figs, peach melba, strawberry pavlova, and pineapple and mint sorbet. The selection also boasts a range of vegan-friendly sorbets, and will rotate new flavours into the mix regularly. Beyond gelato, Miss Sophia’s Gelateria will soon offer shakes and sundaes, with the latter doused with a liberal squirt from the choc-hazelnut fountain. All gelato is made on site using fresh produce and some gourmet products imported from Italy, as well as Norco milk from the Scenic Rim-based dairy co-operative.
