Martha Street Kitchen brings pizza, pasta and a whole lot of spritzes to Camp Hill
We never know what to say when someone asks what makes a restaurant or bar cool. It’s mostly a combination of intangible factors that allow a venue to have ‘it’. We don’t quite know what it is, but Martha Street Kitchen in Camp Hill has it in spades. If we had to give you the elevator pitch on this new eatery, it would include mention of an effortlessly chic space, a menu of delights that are a feast for all senses, and a refreshing approach to what a casual suburban eatery and bar should be. Sound good? You bet it does.
For 15 years Restaurant Rapide stood proudly as Camp Hill’s go-to dining destination, which meant in the wake of its closure any follow-up venue had big shoes to fill. Rest assured, dear readers, Camp Hill’s newest resident Martha Street Kitchen is already doing ample justice to the iconic space. The eatery is the brainchild of Patrick Laws and Jennie Byrnes – an enterprising and experienced hospitality duo that has chosen to give the venue new life with a stylish overhaul and a fresh approach to casual dining. With the assistance of Josh Russell from King Arthur and Sunday’s Coffee and Ollie Burscough of Woodsters, Patrick and Jennie have installed a hip, minimalist aesthetic that offers space for sit-down dining and casual bar sipping.
Patrick and Jen created the pizzeria and pasta bar with a desire to bring together disparate groups – carnivores and herbivores, locals and travellers, and feasters and snackers. Patrick has drawn upon his decade of chef experience to create a malleable menu of small plates, pizza, pasta, dessert and a breakfast offering on weekends. Let’s start small – nibbles include Brussels sprouts with smoked sesame cheese, fried chicken with shaved kohlrabi and meatballs with fennel and parmesan cream. If that has only awoken your appetite, satiate it with the likes of mussels with sobrasada and linguini, beef and pork ragu bolognese, beef brisket and chorizo pizza or a roast eggplant pizza with vegan mozzarella. Patrick and Jennie have also gone to great lengths to offer a drinks selection that reflects their personal tastes while remaining accessible. Martha Street Kitchen serves three kinds of Green Beacon beers in cans (as well as a concise selection of locals and internationals) plus several boutique, biodynamic and minimal intervention wines from the likes of Gentle Folk and Shobbrook. Finally, the cocktail list is condensed and features pre-batched and bottled negroni, old Fashioned and M. S. K. martinis as well as built Americano and Aperol Spritzes.
