Sometimes it’s hard to rely on the giant grocery chains for ethical, nutritious and organic produce. Thankfully, smaller scale outlets are popping up around Brisbane to provide a curated collection of wholesome products. Family-owned and operated Market Organics is one such outfit that reliably stocks an ever-evolving selection of organic goods, and its brand-new Newmarket location is looking to give northside locals a taste. Market Organics and its neighbouring eatery Evolve Organic Cafe is putting these products to the test, not only stocking a wide array of certified-organic goods, but also incorporating them into a colourful intolerance-friendly cafe menu.

Johan and Sam Gelderblon started Market Organics as a way to get wholesome organic products into the hands of locals. After building up a following through online sales, the couple decided a retail arm would provide an opportunity to employ old-style customer service, forging closer relationships with customers while giving them a close-up look at the curated selection of goods. Before the first shelf was stocked, Johan and Sam approached Jon Grainger of Press’d fame with the idea of opening an on-site eatery at every Market Organics location. The couple’s ethos resonated – Jon was enticed with the idea of utilising Market Organics goods in the kitchen, giving diners the opportunity to see and taste the produce in action before stepping across to make a purchase from the grocer. To date, Market Organics and Evolve Organic Cafe have established locations in Rocklea, Ipswich and Clayfield, but the crew have built upon gathered momentum, opening a new location in Newmarket last week.

Much like its other locations, the shelves of Newmarket’s Market Organics are stocked with a mix of natural certified-organic products sourced from within Australia and further abroad, encompassing farm-fresh fruit and vegetables, meats, breads, cooking ingredients and plenty of diet-friendly goods. Johan and Sam have cultivated the offering over time, constantly sourcing and adding new products acquired from local growers and further abroad. Newmarket’s Evolve Organic Cafe boasts a larger kitchen that its siblings, giving the culinary team room to experiment and plate up a host of colourful dishes that are loaded with probiotics and organic ingredients. Vegan and vegetarian eaters are also amply catered for, with the likes of scrambled tofu with lemongrass, kaffir lime leaf and Asian kale slaw, mushroom and black-truffle pate, beetroot and hemp burger with kale slaw, and Thai green curry with tofu, pumpkin and chickpeas providing wholesome options. Toby’s Estate has been chosen as the coffee of choice (with dairy-free milk alternatives available), served alongside matcha lattes, loose-leaf tea, bulletproof coffee, cold-pressed juices and smoothies.
