Madame Wu Asian restaurant and bar opens on Eagle Street

Graze on Wagyu dumplings and steamed duck buns while indulging in a cocktail or two as the Story Bridge glitters and winks across Brisbane River.

Following a string of venues across Southeast Queensland, including Beach House Bar & Grill, brothers Nick and Adrian Rosato have hatched up what they call their most ambitious project to date. Perched at Riparian Plaza on Eagle Street, new restaurant and bar Madame Wu dishes up modern Asian delicacies in a lavish setting. Sydney design agency DS17 has crafted the riverside space, which boasts a retractable roof over the balcony and an illuminated, sculptured tree in the centre of the 200-seat restaurant.

Executive chef Brendon Barker brings experience from venues like Ezard in Melbourne and Embassy XO in Sunshine Beach to plate the Asian fusion cuisine. The menu takes a tasty traipse around Asia with dishes being inspired by the flavours of southern China, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan and Japan, but given a local twist with fresh Queensland produce like Moreton Bay bugs and Mooloolaba prawns. Madame Wu taps in to the communal dining atmosphere of Asian restaurants with an assortment of share plates and banquets, and late-night dining on Friday and Saturday nights.

Guests have a range of dumplings to choose from, from Wagyu with Jerusalem artichoke puree and chive oil, to steamed duck buns and North Korean pork dumpling soup. Nibble on fried taro cakes with king brown mushrooms, miso mayonnaise and shiso, or a raw yellow fin and kim chi salad with crispy lotus, before taking advantage of the restaurant’s custom-made duck oven to feast on Chinese roasted duck with peanuts or tea-salted duck stir-fried with mushrooms and black vinegar. The mains menu continues to please with Bangalow pork stir-fried with pardon peppers and sacha sauce, sticky Kilcoy beef with XO sauce, and smoked quail prepared Long Ji-style with chilli, garlic and spring onion. More than 150 wines await in the walk-in cellar, while a cocktail station beckons those in need of a zesty concoction or after-work swill. End the pan-Asian feast with a steamed chocolate bun and green tea ice-cream or a decadent Madame Wu dessert tasting plate.
