London Fields brings pub gastronomy to West End

As welcome as summer in England, London Fields is Montague Road’s cheery new resident, serving contemporary pub fare that showcases fresh local produce.

Bonnie Shearston and Tom Sanceau, the clever folk behind Brisbane City’s Red Hook and Coppa Spuntino, have once again collaborated with Public co-owner Jason White to open London Fields at The Stores West End. The gastropub pays homage to classic British pubs but with a distinctly modern twist, and a fit-out that certainly embraces sunny Queensland weather  – a far cry from the sheltered venues of rainy England. London Fields is bright and airy, with sunshine illuminating the sleek finishes through wide windows and an open barn-style door. The long open kitchen and central bar are highlighted by light timber panelling, contrasted by distressed walls, exposed lightbulbs and an industrial steel rack that suspends a hefty amount of wine above the bar.

Ex-Gerard’s Bistro chef Con Tsangaris heads up the kitchen, devising a nose-to-tail menu that highlights fresh local produce. Small plates and entrees range from smoked tongue with parsley and pickled garlic to gourmet pub-style dishes such as the wagyu cheeseburger and lamb ribs with lemon, anchovy and herb. Meats and mains include organic chicken breast with turnips, barley and sorrel, and a sizeable lamb shoulder to share, with side dishes such as leek, curd and ash, and whole roast cauliflower with garlic and almond. London Fields also had a menu of bar snacks to accompany the suite of craft beers, local wines and cocktails, and is open for breakfast on weekends.
