In order to have a house party, you must have a house. That hurdle was surmounted in style with Little Big House, which has taken over a stunning two-storey heritage-listed Queenslander and converted it into a dream party location. The storied Collins Place building was built in 1889 and has at different points been home to a police station, a spaghetti restaurant and even a private residence. Now, it sits gracefully above Pourboy and Neil Perry’s Burger Project as part of the Southpoint complex. On the ground floor, revellers can take up prime position under the umbrellas and palm trees in the beer garden overlooking Grey Street, or can pop up to the wrap-around deck which provides more shady seating. Once you cross the threshold of the front doors, you have a few options as to where to take the party. Swing a right and order a frosé from the ground-floor bar, take a left and grab a pool cue ahead of a frenzied game in the Pink Pool Room, head upstairs to get a better vantage point from the second-floor verandah or a beverage at Major Mitchell’s bar, or head past the stairs to rock the mic in the Sing Sing karaoke room. The entire interior – designed by H&E Architects in collaboration with Emma Ross – is eclectically decorated, with accoutrements evoking the playful nature of the Queensland summer, our natural flora and fauna, and a laid-back attitude, combined with some engaging wall art from local artist Geoffrey Carran. The nosh on offer at Little Big House is simple but playful, with a little-meets-big theme running throughout and strong emphasis once again on Queensland and its bounty of seasonal ingredients. Head chef Mathew Fulford’s (ex-Stokehouse) menu features a range of eats that pair perfectly with a cold drink, with succulent rotisserie chicken standing as the menu’s central component. Sink your teeth into a little chook or a big chook (or a porchetta, if you fancy) and pair it with the likes of rotisserie-roasted kipfler potatoes, asparagus, peas, corn or gem lettuce salad. On the menu’s flip side, you can choose from little feeds such as broad-bean felafels, fish fingers and chicken parmy spring rolls, or big feeds along the lines of hot-smoked salmon salad, minute steak with salad and chips or beef burgers. Both bars feature an extensive range of beer, wine, spirits, but particular mention must be made of ‘The Queenslander’ – a sessionable brew crafted by Young Henrys specifically for Little Big House – and the range of quirky cocktails in a can. Recommendations include the ‘Feels like Apple Pie’ and ‘Grape Expectations’ concoctions, which are made with lime, apple and Fireball Cinnamon Whisky and Aperol, vodka, lemon, and grape soda respectively.
