For the most part, those with a predilection for only the finest cheeses and smallgoods have to go far out of their way to source it. Fans of Le Fromage Yard’s imported delights relied on the vendor’s market appearances to get their fix, but now the cheese curators have settled in to a bricks-and-mortar space in Morningside. Reliably hawking the best in imported labels as well as some up-and-coming Australian names, Le Fromage Yard is a must-visit for any die-hard dairy lover.

When Stephanie Stevenson travelled to France with Pierre Lantourne, Pierre’s family were impressed with Stephanie’s appreciation of French cheese. Upon the duo’s return to our sunny shores, they noticed that there was a dearth of reliable outlets to obtain imported French cheese, so they started their own. Le Fromage Yard has been dispensing highly coveted cheeses from various markets in Brisbane since 2014, gradually getting a sense of where their regulars lived and travelled from in order to get the goods. After a period of keeping one eye on the real-estate listings, a perfect shopfront tenancy became available in Morningside. After overhauling the worn-down shell of the space, Stephanie and Pierre adopted a French fromagerie aesthetic – installing spacious fridges and shelves to showcase their range of artisan goods.

From its new Morningside home, Le Fromage Yard showcases its already popular range of imported cheeses, but has bolstered its range is some quality Australian-made goods. Approximately 60 cheeses are available here, as well as smallgoods, jams and accessories. Among the range are some names exclusive to Le Fromage Yard, including City Larder’s free-range pork rillettes and pates. Other notable brands include Bee One Third honey, Brisbane’s own Stone & Lea jams, various saucisson by Deliss Artisan French Food, pastes by Jamworks in Stanthorpe, and sweet garlic from Byron Bay Olive Co. Cheese lovers can pre-order hunks of their favourite for pick up, while in the coming months Le Fromage Yard will look to expand their range to include pre-prepared platters, boutique wines and spirits.
