La Stazione Pizzeria and Bar brings its rustic Italian charm to Woolloongabba

The term comfort food took on extra meaning this year. We found ourselves frequently seeking extra comfort through cooking in order to make being in isolation more bearable, often turning to old favourites such as pizza and pasta to get us through the nights stuck inside. As proud as we are with our now finely honed bolognese recipe, the warm hug of an Italian feast is always more enjoyable when prepared by the professionals. Enter Italian eatery La Stazione, which has brought its popular menu of authentic Italian south of the river with a brand-new locale in Woolloongabba.

Milton’s Railway Terrace is known to most as a craft-beer lover’s haven thanks to its close proximity to some of the city’s best suds saloons and froth parlours. But in-the-know locals will tell you that it’s also home to one of the area’s best Italian-inspired pizzerias. La Stazione – which translates to The Station – has been earning props for its heart-warming share-style fare and its cracking cocktail and wine list since opening on the strip in 2017. With a warm approach to hospitality that favours versatility and comfort (that means it’s suitable for family feasts and date-night dinners), and a menu that offers a modernised take on authentic Italian favourites, it was only a matter of time before the increasing demand necessitated an expansion. In early October the La Stazione team opened the doors on its sibling eatery – handily situated across the road from The Gabba at the base of Trafalgar Lane. Offering a continuation of the Milton locale’s easygoing vibes and rustic appeal, the La Stazione team has settled into the space (formerly home to La Famiglia), bringing with it a new woodfired pizza oven and a desire to please.

If you haven’t sampled La Stazione’s bounty before, allow us to fill you in on the need-to-know details. The specialties here are pizza and pasta (naturally), with a broad range of classic winners and out-of-the-box options to choose from. Seeking an authentic flavour outing? The diavola (sugo, mozzarella, salami and olives), tartufo (mushrooms, truffle paste, mozzarella and pecorino) and the salsiccia e patate (sausage, potatoes and provolone) pizzas are a top choice, but Australian-inspired riffs like the BBQ chicken, meat lovers and ham-and-pineapple pizzas are also highly recommended. La Stazione’s pasta and risotto selection offers plenty of variety, too – think beef-cheek ragu fettuccine, seafood-loaded spaghetti marinara, baked gnocchi with mozarella and parmesan, and risotto with asparagus and provolone. The snacks and sides selection is not to be overlooked, especially when the likes of salt-and-pepper squid, crumbed macaroni-and-cheese croquettes and velvety burrata make for perfect appetisers. Oh, and before we forget – La Stazione’s mains (eye-fillet steaks, fish of the day bathed in white wine and caper sauce, and veal scallopini) are worth saving room for. To wrap up proceedings, you can’t go past the Nutella pizza, which is a decedent finisher. In true Italian style, the eatery’s drinks list includes everything from aperitifs (Aperol spritz, Americanos and Campari sodas) and cocktails to beers, ciders and an extensive array of Italian, Australian and French wines available by the glass and bottle.

La Stazione Pizzeria and Bar is now open at Trafalgar Lane – opening hours and contact details can be found in the Stumble Guide.
