Kentucky Fried (Duck) done differently at Public, Brisbane City

Old-world apothecary meets New York loft apartment is the distinct and character-exuding feel of new city restaurant Public.

Half of the team from Woolloongabba bar Canvas, Bonnie Shearston and Tom Sanceau have just opened the doors on their new food venture.

Creating a new destination above the city streets at 400 George, Public is sociable, fun, casual dining, where people can feel comfortable ducking in solo for a drink and a single plate or grazing all afternoon with friends.

This no-rules approach is fuelled by the menu of share plates, ranging in size from the Szechwan Cashews ($4) and Duck Egg, Truffle and French Toast ($8) to the Scallop, Pork Popcorn and Pear Puree ($12) and Kentucky Fried Duck ($18).

This social approach to eating eliminates any food envy you may experience upon eyeing others’ meals post ordering, and is also partly the inspiration behind the name, derived from the accessibility and comfort of a community-type atmosphere, with a cheeky reference to the city’s public service-stuffed streets mixed in.

Pop in for Canvas-worthy cocktails from 3:00 pm on Saturday, meet Kevin the taxidermy peasant – soon to be joined by Pierre the Peacock – and marvel at the cool prints, old bottles and bizarre knick knacks, while sampling the creative flavour fusions and twists on homestyle, family-favourite dinners.
