Be tempted by German-style pastries straight from the oven at Kaptain Patisserie

When he is not full-time teaching pastry skills to up-and-coming pastry chefs at South Bank Institute of TAFE, Stephen Kaptain is cooking up a storm in his shared kitchen in Bulimba and selling to local markets and boutique events.

Kaptain Patisserie’s Stephen Kaptain grew up in the kitchen. His father was a pastry chef and Stephen spent his youth surrounded by the sweet aroma of their pastry and bakery shop in country Germany. Stephen followed in his father’s footsteps and became a pastry chef and when he moved to Australia in 2000, and baking German-style pastries was of course his specialty.

Stephen started out wholesaling his baked goods, but then the market demand took over and he preferred to sell direct to the consumer. Kaptain Patisserie can be found fortnightly at the Nundah Farmers Market or a various boutique events like the Brookfield Show. On the market menu are pies, pastries, cakes, slices, tarts, biscuits and quiches.

Each fortnight when Kaptain Patisserie sets up stall at the Nundah Farmers Market, he bakes his German-style pastries fresh at the market so they are literally straight out of the oven and into the mouths of discerning market dwellers. Stephen also supports the Nundah Farmers Market fruit stalls by buying all his seasonal fruit direct from his neighbouring stallholders. Plums have been his recent sweet addition to pastries, but as the season changes he will soon be moving on to pears. Head to the Nundah Farmers Market this Sunday and follow your nose to the freshly baked pastries.
