Beccofino serves up Julius Pizzeria in South Brisbane
The boys from Teneriffe local Beccofino have ventured south of the river, opening up new sibling venue Julius Pizzeria in South Brisbane.
Julius Pizzeria welcomed in hungry patrons to its new South Brisbane digs last night, sitting pretty on the corner of Grey Street and Fish Lane beneath Aria’s new Austin development. This is the latest venture from Cordell Khoury and Paolo Biscaro, ten years after Beccofino graced Teneriffe with its presence. The boys have partnered up with Aleks Dzajkovski and head chef Anthony Nicastro, who have also come from Beccofino and will be at the venue full time. Julius makes the most of the space’s original features giving the restaurant a distinct urban feel, with exposed-brick walls and high ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling glass windows allowing diners to look out over the Cultural Centre and Fish Lane.
Lovers of Beccofino will be pleased to know that Julius serves up a very similar menu, holding on to some time-honoured classics and throwing in a few new items. Wood-fired pizzas will be pumped out of the custom-built Stefano Ferrara oven, hand built in Naples complete with custom tiling bearing the restaurant’s moniker. You can select from rosse or bianche pizza bases, with toppings such as salsiccia – tomato, chilli, mozzarella, provolone, pork and fennel sausage and rocket leaves – or gennaro, with mozzarella, salami, roasted eggplant, chilli and stracchino cheese. Antipasti highlights include buffalo mozzarella and artichoke trifolati with toasted bruschetta, while the pasta selections range from duck and tomato ragu pappardelle to broccoli orecchiette with anchovies, toasted breadcrumbs and chilli – two long-time Beccofino favourites. The restaurant also houses an extensive Aperol-lined bar, where you can perch on a stool while waiting for a table or takeaway, or simply pop in for an Aperol Spritz and nibble of bar food. Theatre goers can book a pre-show sitting no later than 6:00 pm, however, similarly to its sibling venue, Julius won’t be accepting general bookings.
