There is a definite chill in the air and that means wonderful farm-fresh seasonal winter fruits and vegetables are ripe for the taking.

The cold change brings with it new seasons cravings for soups, stews, casseroles and roasts, all made better with locally grown seasonal vegetables including broccoli, potatoes, pumpkins, asparagus and brussels sprouts. Sweet tooths can indulge desserts with the freshness of winter fruits, including berries of all hues, citrus, melons, passionfruit and pawpaw, as well as apples, bananas, avocados and kale, which are rich in flavour and full of goodness. Plus there are the all important cold-fighter additions of garlic, ginger and onions, which can be added to a variety of delicious winter dishes.

All these and more are plentiful at the Jan Powers Farmers Markets in Brisbane City, the Powerhouse in New Farm, Manly and Mitchelton. Just some of the stalls that you can pick up your winter fresh fruit and vegetables are My Berries, Noosa Red Tomatoes, Zesty Herbs from the Tweed Valley, Kandara Farm from the Glasshouse Mountains, Mulgowie Corn and Beans, Byron Bay Green Effect, Bob’s Bush Honey and Vegetables from Mulgowie, Byron Bay Blueberries and Glenbrook Farm from Mundubbera.

When strolling the markets for your fresh winter produce, you can also find great spots to catch up with friends for a coffee, connect with farmers to learn about where your produce comes from and discover new food innovations. Head down to one of the Jan Powers Farmers Markets this weekend and experience the grass-roots sense of community along with farm-fresh produce, flowers, breads, artisan products, meat, fish, poultry, plants and organics.
