All of the best things to sip, snack and sample at James Street Food & Wine Trail’s Market Day

We’re not ones to play favourites, but when it comes to the annual James Street Food & Wine Trail, our hearts really do belong to Market Day. Picture it – strolling down Brisbane’s most chic promenades while snacking and sampling bespoke bite-sized creations from its selection of award-winning eateries sounds pretty dreamy, right? Block out Sunday July 28 in your diary and prepare for the most elegant food coma of your life – here are ten eats you need to make room for on Market Day.

Gerard’s Bistro
James Street kingpin Gerard’s Bistro has recently nabbed a brand-new head chef in the form of Adam Wolfers, and he’s certainly come to play this Market Day. In line with its Middle Eastern vibes, Gerard’s will be serving up two kinds of manousheh – the Lebanese classic likened to pizza. Choose from Za’atar or Merguez varieties finished with labneh, herbs and pickles.

Hellenika
Opa! Treat your tastebuds to a (moveable) Greek feast with Hellenika’s Market Day haul. The celebrated eatery is keeping it classic with crowd favourites cooked to absolute perfection – get your fill of chargrilled lamb ribs with tzatziki, a fresh-as-heck Greek salad, or the flaky goodness of a perfectly layered spanakopita.

Bucci
We adore a no-mess, hands-on snack that is easy to eat while weaving through crowds – and Italian mainstay Bucci answered our prayers accordingly. Choose from two varieties of delectable arancini – meat eaters can get their fill of beef ragu and tomato risotto, while those more herbivorous will delight in the roast mushroom risotto ball with truffle and mozzarella. Bellissimo!

CRU Bar
Gnoch gnoch, who’s there? CRU Bar’s pillow-soft, silky smooth gnocchi! Indulge in either a meaty or veg-friendly serving of the perfect potato parcels – we’re talking braised duck with orange jam, rocket and Parmesan salad, or Genoese pesto with confit tomato, Adelaide Hills chèvre, radicchio and cress.

Gelato Messina
Sharpen that sweet tooth, because the dessert wizards at Gelato Messina have gone all out with two drool-worthy Market Day exclusives dreamed up with the Greek gods from Hellenika. We have seven words for you – loukoumades gelato sliders and baklava gelato sundaes. This is not a drill. You must try.

Lobby Bar Restaurant
You’ve got to love market eats that can be easily savoured with one hand – and Lobby Bar Restaurant’s offering delivers on both taste and convenience. Wrap your lips around the likes of crayfish brioche rolls and beef brisket baguettes – and don’t forget the crispy, golden fries.

Harveys Bistro
It’s time to pay your respects to one of James Street’s OG dining tenants. Proving that they love to level up a dining experience, the crew from Harveys will be turning out a zesty-fresh Asian chicken salad, a spiced roasted lamb shoulder with sunflower-seed hummus, plus a grilled haloumi and broccoli salad with all of the trimmings.

Chow House
We’re nuts about Chow House’s street eats, and Market Day is the perfect time to witness this offering in its truest form. Snack on Thai fried chicken marinated in galangal, coriander and palm sugar with peanut sauce for dipping, or tuck into a barbecue corn and zucchini fritter sprinkled with roast peanuts.

Jocelyn’s Provisions
It would be remiss of us not to mention one of James Street’s most beloved treat tenants. Jocelyn’s Provisions will be serving up three items exclusive to Market Day – Calzone Rosso with spicy sopressa, fior di latte, fresh basil and sugo, the veg-friendly Calzone Bianca with caramelised onion, mushrooms, brie, mozzarella and rocket, plus delectable chocolate-dipped cannoli stuffed with orange and mascarpone, dark chocolate or pistachio cream.

Sixes and Sevens Bar
A street party is only as good as its libations, so Sixes and Sevens will be quenching all manner of thirsts in style with the return of its Stone & Wood truck pouring ice-cold beers. You can also sip concoctions from the brand-new Brookvale Union van – we’re eyeing off the Spicy Mule with Fireball, chilli, lime and ginger beer.

Ready to spend a whole day feasting and frolicking in the sunshine? James Street Food & Wine Trail’s Market Day kicks off at 10:00 am on Sunday July 28 – to scope the full menu, head here.
