Sink your sweet tooth into the International Cake Show Australia this weekend
Brisbane is set to host Australia’s only international-standard cake show from tomorrow, Friday May 17 to Sunday May 19, transforming Brisbane Showgrounds into a giant patisserie.
Thousands of pastry chefs, bakers, chocolatiers, cake decorators, edible artists and food personalities from across the globe will converge at the Brisbane Showgrounds this weekend for the International Cake Show Australia. The world’s best gravity-defying sugar geniuses will go head to head in 33 categories of comps across three days, while the enthralled public can join hands-on workshops and masterclasses, enjoy 90 free live demonstrations (every hour, on the hour) and browse a huge range of pop-up shops showcasing the latest trends and products. This year, Australia’s largest cake competition will see categories range from Magical Winter Wonderland to the Great Australian Outback, and Carved or Sculpted Musical Instruments to Motherly Love. Students six to 12 years old will show off their Cupcakes with Sugar Farm Yard Animals or Teddies, while students 13–17 will enlist Birthday Cakes for Best Friends.
Professional bakers will help create a giant 5 m x 4.5 m Great Barrier Reef Sugar Spectacular, including a huge coral cave, life-size shark, marine life and diver all made from cake, while a televised international cake-off challenge will see six famous cake artists being dished out challenges by Karen Portaleo (US) and judged by Rosie Drummer (UK), Adriano Zumbo (Australia) and Monica Cavallaro (Australia). Kids will love the sugar representations of their favourite nursery rhymes, including a 6 m x 6 m Wind in the Willows exhibit, and lovers can check out the Haute Couture Wedding Marquee and Wedding Cake Wars. If you need a little sustenance after all that sugar, pop on your black tie and head along to the 2019 Australian Cake Artists and Decorators Association Australasian Cake Oscar Awards on Saturday May 18.
