For your health – five immune-boosting recipes to add to your weekly rotation

When a new year rolls around, we tend to focus on our health and the choices we make around food. This year in particular, for reasons we care not to remind you of, our health is more important than perhaps ever before. When it comes to our immune function, there are a number of things that we can do to make sure we’re in the best shape we can be – washing our hands, exercising, getting enough sleep – but the easiest way (and most delicious) is by incorporating immune-boosting foods into our diet. To help you achieve primo health during this time, here are five nutrient-rich recipes to add to your repertoire.

Watercress, lemongrass and egg soup
Packed with micronutrients and all of the right spices, this vibrant soup looks and sounds just as healthy as it is. Plus, the recipe was created by renowned chef Shannon Bennett – so it’s guaranteed to be delicious. Featuring wonder foods such as coconut oil, turmeric, ginger, garlic, lemongrass and watercress, this soup is sure to give your immunity a kickstart. Oh, and did we mention it’s topped with a gooey poached egg? Delicious.

Asian immune broth
Even just reading the word ‘broth’ makes us feel healthier. Described as a “totally nutritious and delicious immune boosting soup”, this Asian-inspired broth is packed with all of the good stuff. As old wives’ tales (and nutritionists) have proven time and time again, chicken-bone broth alone is a miracle food – ideal for immune boosting, aiding digestion, replenishing collagen … the list goes on. There’s a reason chicken soup has long been considered the go-to food when we’re sick or run down! On top of that you’ve got immune-boosting garlic and shiitake mushrooms, anti-inflammatory ginger, anti-microbial lemongrass and more.

Blueberry icy poles
We know what you’re thinking – soup?! In this weather? If you can’t fathom downing soup when the temperature is up, look to these refreshing blueberry icy poles instead. These healthy pops feature blueberries and green tea, both packed with antioxidants, and mint leaves, which provide antiseptic and antibacterial properties.

Kefir and citrus fruit salad with cumin, honey, ginger and lemon dressing
Keeping on the summer theme for you, we offer this delectable fruit salad with a savoury twist. Vitamin C is the key active immune booster here, with mandarins, oranges, ruby red grapefruit and kiwifruit. Yep, kiwifruit! An unsung hero of the immunity world, kiwifruit is super rich in immune-supportive nutrients such as vitamins C, K, E and folate, as well as carotenoids, fibre and phytochemicals. Plus you’ve got gut-flourishing kefir, ginger and Manuka honey in there, all giving your health some extra help.

Spinach gratin
There’s a reason they say to eat your greens – leafy green veg are about the best things for us to eat. Spinach doesn’t just make Popeye stronger – it significantly benefits us all, especially when we are feeling a little run down. It’s high in iron, which is fundamental for healthy development of our immune systems, plus it’s a fantastic source of vitamins K and B2, folic acid and magnesium. This spinach gratin is packed with nutrients but is an absolute treat to eat – eat it with some crusty bread for major cob loaf vibes.
