Grub Street, Gaythorne

Find gluten-free brunch goodness at Grub Street, Gaythorne

While unsuspecting in location, one peek at the Grub Street menu will leave your inner foodie eager for a visit. Nestled on a busy corner in suburban Gaythorne, this buzzing little cafe crafts the kind of flavour combinations you would expect from an inner-city fine-dining restaurant.

On weekends you’ll find a flurry of families and young folk breakfasting side-by-side in the sun, all finding the choice between the masterful sweet and savoury concoctions difficult. Grub Street simplifies the choices for the dairy- and gluten-intolerant, or vegetarian- and vegan-inclined diner, with each meal (and with plenty of options to choose from) clearly marked. There’s the infamous Carrot Pancakes served with miso pumpkin, a poached egg and a swirl of black olive caramel ticking all vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free boxes, and able to be served vegan on request.

For the avoider of gluten, Haloumi and Zucchini Fritters, Poached Eggs, Spinach, Eggplant & Tomato Kasoundi and Dukkah will pull at savoury strings, while the Coconut, Wattleseed, Hazelnut and Cocoa Toasted Muesli with Poached Rhubarb and Buffalo Yoghurt will tempt the sweet tooth. For something a little different, try the Japanese Rolled Omelette with Sake-Cured Salmon, Pickled Carrot and Daikon (GF, DF), or for those ‘normal’ folk perhaps the Mushroom Duxelles and Truffled Pecorino Scrambled Eggs or the PB ‘n’ J Vanilla French Toast will tickle your fancy.

Grubb Street brews up Giancarlo Coffee, uses RSPCA-approved free-range eggs and pork, serves preservative-free bread from West End bakers Le Sebastian, and makes (and sells) its own jams, chutneys and relishes. The menu changes every couple of months, so pop in soon to try these latest seasonal offerings.
