New cafe Gaviato’s opens at Woolloongabba

A new resident has popped up ever so quickly in the Woolloongabba antique precinct, filling the gap left by the sadly departed Five Sugars and Piece Together. New cafe Gaviato’s serves up creamy Campos coffee and an array of gluten-free treats.

Being a coeliac, the owner Gavin Leonard is passionate about offering delicious, wholesome foodstuffs to those with allergies, but without the additional charge. No extra pennies are required for soy milk in your coffee order and plenty of gluten-free treats grace the front cabinet. Find brownies from Newstead chocolate mavens Dello Mano and slices, cupcakes and other sweet treats from local bakers, OMG its gluten free.

On Fridays and Saturdays, Gaviato’s will share the space with pop-up florist Urban Bloom in store, so you can while away the morning reading a magazine or the newspaper amongst sweet floral scents. A book-swap shelf lets visitors pick a book for reading over their coffee, and take it home, leaving one of their own oldie-but-a-goodie tomes in its place.

Gavin and his wife spent last weekend stripping back the plaster and paint inside to reveal the building’s original brick wall, even discovering a fireplace behind the plaster out the back in ‘stage two’, which will house a large communal table for general sipping duties and also double as a boardroom and workspace. ‘Stage three’ will see a secret garden developed out the back, a green sanctuary accessible by an Alice-in-Wonderland-esque children’s sized door for the kids. The crooning sounds of live jazz will soon fill the space on a Sunday afternoon, while young, up-and-coming artists will also have the opportunity to exhibit their works throughout the cafe.
