Savour vegan eats and specialty coffee at Fortitude Valley newcomer Froth on Brunswick

The past few years have seen the word ‘froth’ take on new meaning. On the one hand, it still refers to the light foam one might savour on top of a beer or freshly brewed cappuccino. Alternatively, ‘to froth’ is to experience a heightened level of excitement at the thought of something – perhaps at the prospect of a killer surf, a jam-packed festival line-up or great brunch? It all works! California Lane’s newest eatery Froth on Brunswick is giving locals the chance to experience froth both ways. Sip on a perfectly frothed coffee or froth over its menu of vegan-friendly eats – either way you’ll be frothin’ satisfied.

Since officially opening to the public in September 2018, California Lane has flourished into a popular hub of dining and retail. The youngest sibling of the Apostolos family’s laneway collective (which also includes Winn Lane and Bakery Lane) has just welcomed a new eatery to its midst, taking over the space of recently departed specialty coffee nook LTD Espresso & Brew Bar. Froth on Brunswick is the brainchild of Shay Hayston – owner and operator of Winn Lane’s No. 5 Cafe and California Lane dessert and cocktail spot The Stand. Having already taken on a neighbouring commercial kitchen to cater for his various laneway functions, Shay seized the opportunity to take over the LTD tenancy and its alfresco dining space, adding more room for events and scope for a composed brunch menu for hungry locals. Shay describes Froth on Brunswick as the upmarket sibling of No. 5, with a larger menu and more room to relax across the cafe’s interior and laneway dining spaces. The old LTD aesthetic has been replaced by a more rustic vibe, while the rear portion now boasts a wooden deck that doubles as a stage, as well as more lush greenery and timber furnishings.

Froth’s menu has been built on vegetarian- and vegan-friendly foundations, with omnivorous dishes and additions available for those that love a bit of bacon or haloumi on the side. Stand-out options include the crispy potato hash cake with avocado hummus, sauteed kale and vegan dill aioli, the smashed avocado on toasted rye with pomegranate, pickled fennel, puffed quinoa, and chia-berry relish, the breakfast truffle-mushroom gnocchi with semi-dried tomato and cauliflower puree, and the decadent Cherry Ripe French toast, which comes with chocolate anglaise, sour-cherry gel, mascarpone, cherry panna cotta, coconut flakes and meringue. Toby’s Estate has crafted a special blend for Froth’s espresso-based coffee offering, while cold brew will be available from next week. Not a coffee drinker? No problem – Froth also stocks a selection of tea alongside cold-pressed juices and fruit-packed smoothies. The coming weeks will see Froth commence a dinner service on Friday and Saturday nights, serving up a concise menu (three entrees, three mains, three desserts), that’ll change every three months.
