Lick your lips for Twisties-salt chips at Caxton Street’s Fritzenberger

Roast chicken dinner salt. Parmesan salt. Shiitake mushroom salt. Vegemite salt. Twisties salt. If you’re ready to spice up your chip-eating game, then you best start planning a trip to Caxton Street. There’s a new kid on the block ready to blow your fritzen mind, and he goes by the name of Fritzenberger.

Just as doctor Frankenstein worked tirelessly to create his beloved monster, the brains behind Fritzenberger have been working hard to create the perfect place to celebrate the deliciousness that is – if you haven’t already realised – the combination of frites (chips) and burgers. Now before you write this off as just another burger joint, hear us out. Fritzenberger comes from Steve Minon and Matthew Bailey, the clever guys behind Harajuku Gyoza and Nitrogenie. Together with chef Matt Fosker (ex Story Bridge Hotel) and getting some early menu conception help from Ryan Squires, the team has created a simple menu of burgers, creative sides and desserts, with each dish celebrating fresh produce sourced – in the most part – from within a 100-km radius. While the concept of burgers and fries is quite basic, the clever cats in the kitchen employ some killer techniques to beef up each dish, with everything (minus the buns and cheese) made in house.

On the burger front, Fritzenberger offers six options, ranging from the classic beef Fritzen Burger with aged cheddar, hydroponic lettuce, organic tomato, Spanish onion and house-made Fritzensauce, to the smoky pulled pork burger and Southern-fried chicken burger. Pump up the jam (literally) with an added slick of bacon jam or strips of maple-candied bacon. The frites situation might seem simple, until you peruse the Fritzensalt station. Flavour options include roast chicken dinner, Vegemite, shiitake mushroom, parmesan and beetroot salt, ready and waiting to take your chips to the next level. Oh, you’ve advanced to the ultimate frites level? Then you need the loaded fries topped with cheese sauce, candied bacon, shallots, Fritzensauce and finger-lickin’ Twisties salt. Ungh. Just make sure you leave room for sides such as crumbed slow-cooked pork-belly bites, or the cute-as ice-cream dessert burger. Food isn’t the only hero at Friztenberger – the bar has its own on-site microbrewery, pumping out everything from classic-style lagers to the more experimental coffee IPA, plus you’ll find an impressive selection of local and international bottled and tap beers, wines and more.
