Plant-based deli Flora by Greenhouse Canteen brings meat-free eats to West End

Earlier in the year, heralded Gold Coast outfit Greenhouse Canteen & Bar made a big splash in Brisbane’s plant-based dining scene with its northernmost eatery. Now, six months on from Greenhouse Canteen’s arrival, the wholesome food specialist has opened up an express outlet on West End’s fringe, dishing up an assortment of delicious daytime eats from vegan-friendly nachos, waffles and burritos to grab-and-go salads, sandwiches and coffee.

The arrival of Greenhouse Canteen was a significant milestone in 2018’s enduring plant-based dining renaissance. Gold Coast local Natalie Evans brought her popular menu of meat-free eats to South Brisbane in May, but the potential to bring Greenhouse’s fast-casual counterpart Flora by Greenhouse Canteen north remained up her sleeve. The Flora concept was first unveiled at Miami’s Love Child Market Place foodie hub in February, where it debuted a selection of plant-based breakfast boxes, loaded sandwiches and salads – perfect for those on the move. Flora’s Brisbane iteration is a little bit bigger – a stand-alone deli housed in a charming light-filled space on Boundary Street, complete with communal seating and a cosy living-room vibe. This familial nostalgia forms a key aspect of the interior aesthetic – antiquated recipes plucked from the pages of old issues of Women’s Weekly adorn the walls, showing just how far we’ve come when it comes to wholesome, plant-based cooking.

Unlike its night owl South Brisbane sibling, Flora emphasises an express-based service and a casual dine-in experience. Two menu streams are available to diners – a sit-down made-to-order selection and grab-and-go bites. Brunch munchers can enjoy organic tofu scramble with hash, waffles, stuffed bagels, toasted sandwiches and the signature ‘bruffin’, while the takeaway cabinet is chock-full of rotating choices across tasty sandwiches, sweets, burritos and salads. Like its Gold Coast location, Flora serves Allpress Coffee, with a special organic blend pairing well with Flora’s selection of milk substitutes. Those looking for a cool drink to enjoy over summer can also sip on cold-pressed juices, kombucha and iced chai, cacao and turmeric drinks.
