Freshly roasted coffee at Fonzie Abbott Espresso, Hamilton

With recycled timber furniture, imported coffee sacks hanging on the wall and an overall industrial edge, Fonzie Abbott Espresso sticks out like a sore thumb on the Racecourse Road strip … in a good way.

With a focus on coffee with just a few light fare options, the folk behind Fonzie Abbott are serious about their espresso. Importing green beans from all over the world, including single origin and fairtrade options, they roast the beans on site, concocting an array of blends for use in store and to take home.

There are a few morning coffee acompaniments such as the savoury Brekky Wrap, and a Ham and Cheese Croissant, while sweet-tooths will lean towards the danishes lavish with juicy berries.

Run by the same folk as Vagelis next door, this first coffee-only venture has been steadily gaining a regular crowd since August last year, with plans to expand to two more locations in the future. This week try the Indonesian Blue Batak blend, with a medium-bold body and sweet, syrupy characters.
