Hop along for some Italian fare at James Street’s Fenek

With a wholesome and hearty mixture of warming Italian-influenced fare, Fenek is plating up dishes that will have you transported to continental Europe. Pasta, pizza, dessert and wine – Fenek caters to all of the popular classics but slips in a few surprises that will surely satisfy curious palates.

As one of Brisbane’s pinnacle dining precincts, James Street has maintained a hot streak of hosting top-notch eateries – a reputation that has only grown stronger with the arrival of Fenek Cafe and Restaurant. Quietly opening to the public in the early stages of January 2017, Fenek – owned and operated by hospitality vet Wayne Stringer and marketing wiz Thi Lan Le – is looking to become an abode for diners seeking authentic European fare on the fringes of James Street’s main drag. Situated across the road from the Sage Hotel, Fenek puts a stylish foot forward with a chic and minimalist aesthetic that juxtaposes nicely with the rustic feel of the predominantly Italian fare.

Here’s a bit of tasty trivia to start – the word fenek means rabbit in Maltese. Wayne has imbued some of his Maltese heritage in the kitchen’s approach to cooking, using different techniques (and a few Maltese flavours) when whipping up its menu of dishes. The menu itself is divided into starters, pizzas, mains, pasta dishes and desserts, with intriguing selections including a Malta-inspired rabbit pizza, duck gnocchi, quail served saltimbocca style and chilli prawns. An ever-growing drink selection currently includes international and local wines and beers, plus Cleanskin coffee for those that need a pick-me-up to see them through the night. Fenek Cafe and Restaurant will look to open for breakfast upon the completion of Sage Hotel, offering up fast breakers such as eggs Benedict with shaved pork belly and 63-degree egg soldiers with truffle.
