The sweetest thing – DoorDash and Chef Collective to distribute the Ekka’s iconic strawberry sundaes

As much as we love showbags, sideshow games and fireworks, the biggest sting of the cancellation of this year’s Ekka is the thought of missing out on its strawberry sundaes. Fear not, Ekka enthusiasts and ice-cream addicts – delivery service DoorDash and smart-kitchen hub Chef Collective are uniting to deliver this famous dessert across Brisbane and raise funds for a great cause. Locals can get their fix from 10:00 am tomorrow Wednesday August 11 – read on to find out how …

When COVID-19 forced the Ekka to cancel its 2020 festivities, locals turned out in droves to get their annual dose of the Ekka’s strawberry sundae via a pop-up drive-through outlet. This year Brisbane residents can save themselves the hassle of getting in the car – a taskforce has been assembled to deliver strawberry sundae DIY packs directly to residences across town. Brisbane City Council’s Brisbane Economic Development Agency has engaged with delivery app DoorDash and Coorparoo-based cloud-kitchen crew Chef Collective to distribute the goodies, which will be made available to order via the DoorDash app from 10:00 am on Wednesday August 11. The precious packs offer everything one needs to assemble 20 sundaes at home – including cones, fruit and the all-important strawberry ice-cream. Delivery is available for those ordering from within centralised areas, while collection points across the city will be established for pick-up orders. DoorDash is also offering new users $20 off their packs and free delivery on their first orders.

While soothing our sweet cravings is a noble cause, this taskforce has more charitable intentions driving it. The initiative has been conceived as a way to help recoup roughly $500,000 raised by the Ekka’s annual strawberry sundae sales – the proceeds of which are donated to The Common Good. This much-needed injection of funds will help The Common Good enable 4000 hours of medical research into areas such as dementia, mental health and heart disease, while also supporting the region’s strawberry growers that count on the Ekka for a considerable chunk of their seasonal revenue. Be sure to download and refresh your DoorDash app at 10:00 am tomorrow – these sundaes will be in high demand!
