Eat Street Northshore hones its green thumb with new hydroponic farm
Since relocating to its new location just over a year ago, Eat Street Northshore has gone from strength to strength. A recent partnership with Modular Farms is set to bear fruit (or in this case, vegetables), as Eat Street Northshore is showing off its new vertical hydroponic farm, which is being utilised to grow herbs and greens for its various food vendors all year round.
The farm-to-table movement has taken great strides in recent years, propelled by our desire to eat only the freshest food. Well, Eat Street Northshore will soon cut the time from farm to mouth even more once the produce from its hydroponic farm arrives in the hands of food vendors. After plans to build an on-site farm at Eat Street Northshore were put on hold due to space restrictions, Modular Farms reached out with a proposition to install its first permanent Australian hydroponic farm in a shipping container on site. A second-story shipping container was given the Modular Farms treatment at Christmas, installing a one-of-a-kind indoor farm that has been designed to propagate herbs and vegetables from seed to harvest in record time.
Eat Street’s Modular Farm is built within a composite-steel container that utilises vertical indoor farming technology, purpose-built LEDs, climate control and air-homogenisation systems that focus on maintaining optimal plant health and maximising yield. To give you an idea of its capability, one Modular Farm can grow over four tonnes of kale a year. That’s a lot of salad. Modular Farms also utilise a sustainable amount of water compared to conventional crops, with dehumidifiers and moisture recycling systems capable of replenishing tank stores. Thanks to the self-contained nature of the set up, Eat Street’s farm can grow different kinds of produce all year round, regardless of seasonal changes and inclement weather. Get ready to taste the goodness – Eat Street Northshore’s vendors will be using Modular Farm produce very soon.
