Try waffles, poffertjes, rookworst and frikandel from Dutch Treats

Dutch cuisine is traditionally quite simple and heavily influenced by the Netherlands’ strong agricultural industries. From market favourite poffertjes to kaassoufflé, rookworst and waffles, Dutch food offers all kinds of delights.

Proud Dutchman Walter van Heumen moved to Australia at the age of 35. Now in his 60s, Walter still has a passion for all things Dutch and presents them via Dutch Treats to Brisbane’s Dutch community and beyond at the Fig Tree Farmers Market, Moggill Markets, The Gap Farmer’s Market and Boundary Street Markets.

From savoury to sweet as well as traditional drinks, Dutch Treats has an exhaustive seasonally changing menu to offer Brisbane’s west. Fresh waffles and poffertjes, made the traditional Dutch way, are also unexpectedly offered in gluten-free options. Traditional Dutch smoked sausage rookworst is served up hot to eat on the spot or as a take-home pack to add to snacks and soups. You will also find frikandel, a minced meat and spiced sausage (with no skin) is cooked in boiling beef stock, patat frites (double-fried hot chips), croquettes and kaassoufflé, which is melted cheese inside a thin dough-based wrap that has been breaded and then deep fried. Get the last of Walter’s seasonal wintery soups on weekly rotation between Dutch pea soup with rookworst, traditional tomato or chicken. Walter’s imported confectionery called ‘drop’ or liquorice is also a must try.

There is even alcohol-free Dutch Bavaria beer brought over from the Netherlands that Walter continues to amaze market goers with with its authentic flavour.
