Steen Jones resurrects New Farm’s nightlife with exciting new bar Deathproof

You guys know Steen Jones, right? He’s an artist and self-declared adventurer, with his brightly coloured roses, hearts, skulls and more seen splashed upon walls all over Australia and the world. He’s collaborated with the likes of Rolling Stone magazine, Red Bull, Vans and Sailor Jerry among others, and is also the brains behind clothing label Few and Far Collective and creative studio Few and Far Studio. Well, apparently all of that isn’t enough for Steen, who has been working away to bring the people of Brisbane a place to eat, drink, hang and celebrate the good life. His latest project Deathproof opens in New Farm tomorrow, Friday March 17 at 3:00 pm, so if you aren’t already familiar with Steen, you will be soon.

The space
You may have noticed some changes unfolding in the hole-in-the-wall space previously occupied by Anise on Brunswick Street. Since late last year, Steen and co-owner Anthony Calligeros have been working hard to transform the space into new bar and eatery Deathproof. It’s taken all of our strength not to press our faces to the glass to get a sneak peek (okay, we might have once or twice) and watch Steen and his artist friends work their creative magic on almost every surface of the space, including the walls, ceiling and doors. The end result is a neon-lit den of curiosity, with more than 500 skulls painted across the space (including the entire ceiling), a bad-ass tiger mural declaring we’re ‘too tough to die’ (in case the name didn’t give it away, death and immortality are a common theme at Deathproof), and an impressive illuminated brick feature wall, which will rotate collaborative works between Steen and like-minded companies and brands. Head to The Street Photographer for a closer look!

The food and drink
The Deathproof guys aren’t messing around when it comes to killer eats and drinks. If the ‘party and bullshit’ neon sign hanging over the bar didn’t give you the hint, the team wants to make sure that if you’re there, you’re going to have a damn good time. Concoctions, sometimes creepy (hello black skull cocktail), are carefully crafted behind the bar, which you can pair with snacks perfect for drinking. Munch on the likes of Young Henrys beer-battered pickles or onion rings, chunky poutine chips, Deathproof hot wings and a selection of tacos. For a more serious hunger (you know, the kind where you think you might die), chow down on a sandwich served toasted or fresh, with choices including The Reuben, the Los Cubano Steak (that’s brisket, Sailor Jerry pulled pork, Swiss cheese, sliced pickles and mustard – oof), and the double-stacked Deathproof Club – we’re talking pastrami and pulled chicken on that bad boy.

The details
While Deathproof is first and foremost a bar and eatery, Steen and Anthony have huge plans for it to become a multi-faceted space. Collaborating with those like-minded companies and brands mentioned earlier, the bar will create unique activations, including special events, bar takeovers, exhibitions and more. The first collaboration will kick off this Sunday with Sailor Jerry, which will see special cocktails and shots available, and a number of dishes featuring the delicious spiced rum for the next four weeks.
