Fortitude Valley scores a secret event space in the form of Concept at Cupo
One of Fortitude Valley’s finest event spaces is expanding. The team behind Cupo on McLachlan Street has been hard at work planning for the next phase of its evolution, and stage one has just been revealed. Concept is a brand-new bespoke event space and creative hub open underneath the main event room, custom-fitted to allow for just about any function you could possibly conjure.
From weddings and corporate events to creative workshops, the past four years have seen Cupo increase its profile as one of the most flexible spaces-for-hire in Brisbane’s inner suburbs. Co-owned and operated by Leah Tilney of award-winning dance company Elements Collective and DJ-turned-food-whiz Trent Wildman, Cupo’s reputation has steadily grown since its inception, but when a neighbouring tenant vacated the space underneath Cupo’s main event room Trent and Leah saw an opportunity to grow the brand further. Concept is Cupo’s brand-new boutique function space addition, which boasts two bespoke rooms and a bar facilities hewn out of what was once Pure Pole Academy.
Throughout the renovation period, Trent and Leah worked towards establishing a space that could be hired and utilised by creative types seeking a blank canvas to implement their personalised vision for exhibitions, performances and workshops. Intimate crowds of 40 patrons can comfortably mingle in each room, while a private prep kitchen opens up further possibilities for bespoke dinner events, chef pop-ups or product launches. In the coming months, Cupo will look to turn the on-site bar facility into a street-side boozer open on weekends to the general public, but for now it can be incorporated into the venue’s event hire on other nights. The rustic fit-out of DIY furniture and industrial touches is only the first stage of the bar’s existence, as Trent and Leah look to add bi-fold windows looking out to McLachlan Street and a proper fixed bar (complete with beer taps) by year’s end. The bar space doubles as a creative social hub during the day – folks are welcome to post up inside and work on their projects in peace. Once Concept’s bar is up and running, expect the team to recruit various food trucks to pop in and out every weekend. Trent also plans to use Concept as the home for his popular Cut & Cook food pop-ups, which include the likes of Wild Ramen, Pops Chicken and Tacoma Mex.
