Dip your spoon into a jar of organic coconut caramel

Coconut in its many forms has become a staple of our everyday diet over the past few years – coconut water in our smoothies, coconut oil for roasting vegetables, and coconut flour and sugar for baking. Traversing both sweet and savoury recipes, this versatile drupe is both healthy and heavenly. Now a few of the coconut palm tree’s best assets are being blended into a sweet addictive spread.

Spiral’s Organic Coconut Sweet Spread is made using coconut and extra virgin coconut oil, which are crushed together to form a paste, and then blended with coconut nectar to form a caramel. The product is 100 percent certified organic and contains no artificial flavours or colours. The caramel colour and rich sweetness is lent by the inclusion of coconut nectar, which is similar to maple syrup, and can be used as a substitute for agave nectar in recipes. To source coconut nectar, the coconut palm tree is tapped, which sees a nutrient-rich sap extracted from the coconut blossom. The sap remains unprocessed, making it a healthier alternative to sweeteners like maple syrup and agave that are boiled at high temperatures.

In Singapore and Malaysia, a similar product, coconut jam is known as kaya, which is made from coconut milk, eggs, sugar and pandan leaves. Kaya is then enjoyed on crackers or toast at breakfast or as a treat with coffee throughout the day. The Spiral’s coconut spread could be seen as a healthier, more nourishing alternative to kaya, without the added refined sugar and extra ingredients. The coconut caramel can be spread onto pancakes, layered between smores, enjoyed with coconut yoghurt and slices of banana or dolloped onto toast with a poached egg like in this recipe. If you’re patience isn’t strong enough to wait for your slice of sourdough to toast, dunk in a (tea)spoon and sprinkle a few salt flakes on top and you’ll be in heaven. Just don’t practice this addictive method every day. Find Spiral’s coconut products in selected Woolworths between the Asian noodles and Indian curry ingredients.
