Whisky bar Cobbler opens at West End

Enjoying a dapper dram of whisky is about to become the norm amongst the West End bar scene, as cocktail and whisky bar Cobbler joins the suburb. Ex-Sling Lounge owner Martin Lange has teamed up with Asa Boardman and Trent Goodwin of New Farm’s Ponycat and Paddington’s Kettle & Tin to create the new bar, which is tucked off the main drag in Browning Street.

The cocktail list of quirky names sees concoctions based around tequila, scotch, vodka, gin, rum, bourbon and whisky, with a glossary of ingredients shedding light on those peculiar elements of each cocktail (like tonka beans, white tea agave and applejack). More than 150 varieties of whisky can be found behind the wood-topped bar, stemming mainly from Scotland, but American, Canadian, Irish, Japanese and Australian varietals also get a look in. So far, the Swordsmith has turned the most heads, combining banana, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, lime juice and spiced honey syrup.

The space is a mish-mash of textures and themes, melding a montage of black-and-white boxing imagery, with exposed brick, workers cage lights, metal stairs and a faux ornate plaster barfront. Stools and swivel chairs line high tables, while club lounges and boudoir chaises provide a little cushioning to sink into. Cobbler’s mezzanine level is splayed with Asa’s own graffiti, which regulars to Ponycat and Kettle & Tin will recognise, with the entire space beautifully moody and warm in tone.
