Eat your fill at Hendra’s new all-you-can-eat hotspot Chook Wings & Beer

Nothing makes our stomach quiver with equal parts anticipation and fear as the words all-you-can-eat. Perhaps it’s because it senses our brain reverting to its primitive animalistic baseline at the thought of theoretically unlimited food, or maybe it’s just limbering up for the avalanche of grub it’s going to have to make room for. Maybe it’s a little from column A and a little from column B. Either way, you had better don your stretchy pants – Hendra just scored a new fried-chicken buffet restaurant. Chook Wings & Beer officially opens today, Friday January 24, and it’s got loads of saucy wings, crispy fries, stacked burgers and cold drinks ready to consume until your heart’s (or stomach’s) content.

Alyssa Phadungkiat is not one to sit idle. The brains behind Brisbane eateries Phat BoyPhat ElephantChai ThaiAsian Republic and Chapter IV is set to have a busy 2020, with a second Phat Elephant location set to open soon at UPSTAIRS at Toombul and her new fried-chicken concept Chook Wings & Beer debuting in Hendra today. This new concept replaces Alyssa’s beachy Long Island-inspired cafe The Hamptons – pivoting from brunch to buffet and promising a cluckin’ good time for hungry carnivores. The historic Queenslander (which sits on the corner of Gerler Road and Doncaster Street) has undergone some aesthetic tweaks to better suit the offering – some fresh splashes of paint (and some cheeky chicken-themed slogans) add a hint of revved-up energy to the space, while new furnishings offer a bit of extra elbow room for wing slinging. A collection of retro posters adorn the walls, adding some extra flair, and a foosball table sits ready for some competitive gaming.

Chook Wings & Beer offers two kinds of dining – an all-you-can-eat feast and an a la carte selection for those looking to merely peck at a few dishes of their choice. That being said, the all-you-can-eat buffet is certainly the centrepiece here, with basket after basket of wings available alongside unlimited sides. Currently, Chook Wings & Beer serves eight kinds of saucy wings (buffalo, smoky barbecue, Japanese curry, teriyaki, ranch, sweet and sour, satay peanut and original chicken salt), alongside creamy slaw, shoestring fries and fried rice. If you are more eager to pick and choose, the a la carte menu allows diners to select their ideal serving of wings (opt for a half-dozen, a dozen, 18, 24, 36 or a whopping 48 wings), crispy chicken curry or teriyaki rice bowls, or one of two sizeable burgers – the gargantuan The Works Old School Burger or a crispy chicken burger. The drinks menu includes a selection of mainstream beers and a range of colourful fizzy sodas if bubbles are more your thing.

Chook Wings & Beer is now open for dinner only, and is celebrating its launch with all-y0u-can-eat wings and sides for $10.90 until the end of January. For more information, head to the Stumble Guide.
