Chester Street Bakery and Bar reopens in Newstead

Stepping past the white picket fence and into the refurbished recess of Chester Street Bakery and Bar, visitors are warmed by not only the flames of the woodfired oven but also a welcoming atmosphere.

After months of refurbishment, Chester Street Bakery and Bar has once again opened its heart to Newstead locals in search of a loaf of crusty bread or a cup of Grinders coffee. This time around, however, the gourmet sourdough bakery will stay open late, shedding its daytime garb and popping on the fairylights to offer a night-time tipple and a bite to eat. Group patron chef Jocelyn Hancock has crafted a stellar menu packed with standouts, transforming locally sourced produce into takeaway lunch options, casual bar bites, main meals and, of course, a drool-worthy range of bakery goods.

The combined talents of head chef Gareth Devlin, head baker Giacomo Petrini and baker Isaac Green see artisan loaves like rustic fruit and walnut sourdough emerging from the hand-built oven. Breakfast options include daily-filled doughnuts, rhubarb and pear compote, and pecan scrolls, while lunch spans savoury quiches and filled baguettes, and dinner turns to heartier fare like wood-roasted pork belly and lamb loin chops with salsa. Alternatively, guests can pop by for a glass of wine, a craft beer or a cocktail, or fork into a sweet treat like strawberries with vanilla cream and crushed meringue.

Originally opened in October 2012, Chester Street is the fourth member of hotelier Damian Griffiths’ family of Brisbane venues, which includes Alfred & Constance, Alfredo’s Pizzeria and Limes Hotel. Derlot designer Alexander Lotersztain has been called upon once again to add his signature touch to the light-filled space. Vibrant cobalt tiles meet custom-painted lamps and hanging flowerpots, as guests perch at the bar, pull up a seat on the front deck or gather around the communal wooden table.
