Meet a fascinating family of s&p collectors

Salt & Pepper is a short documentary that takes you into the curious world of some serious kitchenware collectors. When director Keith Rivers stumbled upon a craigslist advertisement announcing the sale of more than 2,000 pairs of salt-and-pepper shakers, he dug a little deeper and discovered that the 4,000 beloved relics belonged to a family who had been collecting shakers for generations. Keith tracked down the family’s grainy old Super 8mm videos to weave a beautiful narrative that might have you looking at your shakers a little differently over dinner tonight. Keep your eyes peeled for some weird and wonderful creations. more

Photographs and chocolate make a charming match with The Cocoagraph

Did your grandmother often scare you as child with her taunts that you were cute enough to eat? That stuff is scary when you still think that there’s a monster under the bed. If your grandmother is still of this inclination, or anyone you know for that matter, finally their wish has been granted with the invention of The Cocoagraph. Polaroid-style photographs printed onto slabs of fairtrade chocolate, Cocoagraphs are the creation of Californian creative Rae Vittorelli. Bunker collaborates with LICK! Ice Cream to create its own flavours

Marcus Allison from Milton coffee haunt Bunker has teamed up with local providore LICK! Ice Cream to create his own indulgent flavours of ice-cream. With a base of cream, sugar and eggs that is then flavoured with the same coffee beans and couverture chocolate used in Bunker’s coffee and iced chocolates, the ice-cream is decidedly decadent. The 70% Dark Chocolate flavour carries an intense chocolate hit, and the Dark Horse ice-cream is infused with a rich coffee extract. More experiments are planned in the test kitchen to expand upon the two flavours currently available, with Marcus wanting to replicate his other hot chocolate flavours as part of his ice-cream foray.   more

Read: The Man Who Invented Vegemite

Black, salty and unappetising to the un-Australian eye upon first glance, Vegemite is a national icon. In The Man Who Invented Vegemite, Gold Coast-based author Jamie Callister – the grandson of inventor Cyril Callister – delves behind the red-and-yellow branding to reveal the condiment’s story and the man who brought about its existence. A passionate scientist and innovator, Cyril first produced Vegemite in 1923, but it was another 15 years (until the yeast extract was put into soldier’s ration packs during World War II) that the product took off. Today more than 22 million jars are sold each year. Check out the book here. more

Snack time made easy with Fine Fettle Flats

Snack foods have come a long way since the sugar-filled days of Uncle Tobys Roll-Ups. Made in Sydney, Fine Fettle Flats can be snacked on in all their flavoursome plain (and preservative- and gluten-free) glory or used as an alternative to crackers with dip, cheese or some smashed avocado. The brand has been around for a couple of years now, but has just executed a packaging refurb and introduced a new flavour – Spiced Pear & Hazelnut. We’re quite partial to the Sweet Corn & Paprika, which contains corn, linseed, red onion, freshly squeezed lemon juice, water, garlic, parsley, sea salt, paprika and spices, and is smashed together and dried to retain all that natural goodness. Flavours of Tomato & Basil and Zucchini & Almond also feature, with all varietals available at Sourced Grocer in Teneriffe. Tip: store flats in an air-tight container for ultimate… more
