With Christmas Day falling early in the week this year, we can use the weekend to source the freshest of salad and fruit ingredients, meat, seafood and treats for Christmas lunch from the local farmers markets. This Saturday the Village Market is on at Kelvin Grove from 6:00 am to 1:00 pm, while West Enders can head along to their usual Davies Park Markets from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm. Jan Power’s Farmers Market is at Brisbane Powerhouse on Saturday from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm, with a special Christmas Mitchelton market also running on Sunday December 23 from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm. The Bardon Community Market is also on this Sunday 6:00 am to 1:00 pm, as is the Northey Street Organic Farmers Market from 6:00–10:30 am in Windsor. more
In 2010, Food from the Sky transformed a lifeless space above a supermarket into an urban farm. A collaboration between Andrew Thorton and Azul-Valerie Thome, Food from the Sky sees organic vegetables, fruits, mushrooms and herbs growing on the rooftop, before being sold downstairs in Thornton’s Budgens community supermarket in north London. Combining their shared vision for sustainable microeconomics and the consumption of local produce, Andrew and Azul set up the permaculture garden to bring people together. Food from the Sky also runs training programs in sustainable urban food growth for kids and adults to share knowledge and encourage a healthy, local, down-to-earth future. more

A new market mixing fresh produce and food with handmade goods has started up in Stones Corner. Located along the shopping strip at the corner of Old Cleveland and Logan Roads, the market will run on the first and third Sundays of the month. Wanderers can indulge in a scoop of ice-cream and pick a bunch of flowers for the kitchen table at home, while browsing through the stalls of fresh fruit and vegetables by local growers. For a few weeks last month, Spring Hill’s beloved red deli opened the doors to its new cafe counterpart, putting the menu to trial and gathering feedback from friendly locals. But the owners already had a trip to Italy planned, so we saw the doors shut again for three weeks, while they tasted their way around the Mediterranean. Back in business and full of inspiration, the ladies have pieced together a new menu, with sweet-tooth favourites like the brownie sundae and peaches and cream milkshake staying put. A new mural has joined the space, while the sweet pots of herbs and flowers in jars remain.
