Join Sustainable Table’s Waste Deep campaign

The devoted folk from Melbourne not-for-profit organisation Sustainable Table are putting their hands on their rather large hearts and asking Australia to get on board their new waste-reduction campaign. The team wants to create a short film, Journey to Zero Waste, to show fellow foodies just how easy it is to reduce packaging and food waste when preparing their daily meals. With up to 60% of our personal eco-footprint embodied in the food that we buy, it’s a mission that truly matters. You can do your bit by not only making 2014 a waste-free year, but also supporting Sustainable Table’s Waste Deep Pozible campaign to help them produce this vital documentary. Even crooner Jack Johnson is lending a hand by offering to match funds donated to the campaign before Tuesday December 31. Find out more at All At Once. more

Share stories with The Story of Food cookbook

Food can offer comfort, celebrate a special occasion or act as a bookmark of time. Just as a mum-cooked meal can transport us right back to childhood, a dish from one’s homeland can bring back a surge of personal memories. It’s no surprise that the folks associated with Brisbane’s Romero Centre – which offers support and services to refugees and asylum seekers – have many stories to tell. A new cookbook is now acting as a medium for sharing these special tales, with all profits going towards the group’s social-justice-oriented programs. From kangaroo bulgogi to Burmese salad, the recipes peppered across the pages have been written, photographed and collated by local volunteers. The Story of Food celebrates the many rich layers that make up our culture and is sure to take you on a delicious global journey these holidays. Buy the cookbook online.   more

Filmmakers James Colquhoun and Laurentine ten Bosch take a deeper look at the foods we eat, as well as the processes and industries behind them, and question whether modern society is poisoning itself by consuming highly processed, nutrient-depleted foods. more
